PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls swim and dive team finished off its regular season this weekend with a huge 118-67 win against North Kitsap to finish with a 7-1 record.
The Roughriders beat all of the 2A teams in the Olympic 2A League, losing only to 3A Bainbridge in league meets.
The 200 medley relay team of Harper McGuire, Rachel Cooper, Yau Fu and Mackenzie DuBois won with a time of 2 minutes, 0.63 seconds, earning the Riders a state relay qualifying time.
“These four swimmers have been vying for a state time in this relay all season,” coach Sally Cole said. “Achieving that state time in the first event set the tone for the rest of the meet. You could sense the excitement and see the confidence.”
DuBois dominated the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, touching eight seconds ahead of the nearest Vikings swimmer in both events.
The 200 freestyle relay squad of Danika Asgeirsson, Sara Wilson, Brooke St. Luise and Lizzy Shaw picked up another win.
Shaw, a freshman, topped the field in the 50 freestyle, winning a close race with a time of 28.17. The Riders swept in the 500 freestyle. Fu shaved off 4½ seconds to claim first, McGuire grabbed second and freshman Lynzee Reid clinched a season-best time to nab third.
Port Angeles divers also secured an event sweep. Springing off the board into first was Reid, while Grace Possinger claimed second and Faith Carr, making her varsity debut, came in third.
The 400 freestyle relay team of DuBois, Fu, Asgeirsson and McGuire closed out the meet with a victory.
Up next, Port Angeles heads to the 2A West Central District 3 meet at the Curtis Aquatic Center in University Place on Friday and Saturday. Competing in postseason for the Roughriders are Asgeirsson, Cooper, DuBois, Fu, McGuire, Possinger, Reid, Shaw, St. Luise and Sara Wilson.
