BELLEVUE — The Port Angeles girls softball team remained perfect on the season, sweeping a pair of games from Ellensburg and East Valley of Yakima at Bellevue College on Saturday.
Cheyenne Zimmer picked up the victories in both games. She beat Ellensburg 10-0, going five innings and allowing two walks and two hits. She struck out four.
In the second game, the Riders beat East Valley 12-10 with Zimmer going seven innings. She allowed eight hits and four walks while striking out three.
“Port Angeles outhit their opponents 25-10 on the day,” said coach Morgan Worthington. “Freshman Kennedy Rognlien had a great day at the plate, going 4-for-6 on the day and played great defense at second base.”
Worthington said the Riders also turned two double plays on the day.
Natalie Robinson hit a home run against Ellensburg, while Kennedy Rognlien went 2-for-2 and Abby Kimball 2-for-3.
Against East Valley, Lily Halberg and Taylor Worthington each hit 3-for-4, while Robinson, Kimball and Rognlien all batted 2-for-4.
Port Angeles (1-0, 6-0) returns to Olympic League play with a game at Olympic (0-1, 1-5) on Tuesday.
In other games this weekend, the Forks girls won two games Saturday, beating Coupeville 15-9 and Granite Falls 13-5. The scores were originally posted incorrectly online.
Baseball
Forks 2, Coupeville 1
COUPEVILLE — The Forks duo of Ryan Rancourt and Gunner Rogers fired a 10-strikeout one-hitter in 2-1 victory over Coupeville on Saturday.
Rancourt went 4⅓ innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs. He struck out six and walked four. Rogers went the final 2⅔, allowing no hits and no earned runs, while striking out four and walking one.
In fact, neither team scored an earned run.
Forks only had five hits as a team as it was a pitchers’ duel. Walker Wheeler drove in Jeremy Hutto in the second inning with a single. Hutto had gotten on base on a dropped third strike.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the sixth when the Spartans scored without the benefit of a hit with Rancourt and Rogers combining to drive in a run. Rogers got on board on an error, then stole second and third base. He came in to score on a sacrifice by Rancourt, who picked up the RBI.
Aiden Salazar finished the game 2-for-4 for the Spartans, while Dylan Micheau and Landen Olson had singles.
Forks (0-1, 2-2) is scheduled to play a doubleheader at home at Fred Orr Memorial Park in Beaver against Chief Leschi (0-3, 0-5) at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday.
In other games this weekend, a scheduled contest between Port Angeles and Sehome on Saturday was postponed.
