PORT ANGELES — Earlier this month, the Port Angeles High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps competed at Snohomish High School for its first drill and rifle competition of the season, winning a number of top medals.
Cadets competed in several events in their first competition since early 2020. Port Angeles’ Roughrider Company competed in armed drill, academics, color guard, air rifle, physical strength and unarmed/armed drill downs.
The armed drill team led by the team commander William Rife placed first. Rife also came in first place for armed drill commander.
Naaman McGuffey also ranked first for armed individual exhibition and first for color guard commander. McGuffey’s color guard squad placed second overall.
The academic team placed second, while Addie Lomax placed third for individual academics. For air rifle, the precision team placed first and the sporter team placed fourth. Jenna Sanders received first place for individual (579 out of 600), and Cheyenne Maggard came in third (564 out of 600). Brian Guttormsen finished first in armed drill down, while McGuffey came in second.
“It was amazing to be back competing in person and building camaraderie with the other NJROTC units again,” said cadet LCDR Luke Gavin, the unit commanding officer.
Klahhane wins medals
PORT ANGELES — Klahhane Gymnastics participated in the Holiday Express Critique Meet hosted by Metropolitan Gymnastics in Kent from Friday to Sunday.
In the Silver Division Jr. A age group, Harper Hilliker placed third in the all-around with a score of 35.50; Elyse Brown finished fourth in the all-around, scoring 36.0 in the Jr. B age group.
Neveah Thurman-Dupuis took fourth in the Sr. A age group with a score of 35.60. Also competing in the Silver Division were Raynee Ciarlo, Gracelyn Goss, Saffron Tschida and Daylen Williams.
In the Gold Division, Kira Hartman was second in Jr. B uneven bars (9.175). The Gold Team brought home four medals in the floor exercise — Mariah Traband, Jr. A, third (9.15); Lauren Cline, Jr. C, second (9.4); Lucy Spelker, Sr. A, (9.10) and Taylor Bugge, Sr. A, third (9.05).
Jessamyn Schindler and Scarlett Sullivan competed in the Platinum Division and qualified for the state competition in April with respective all-around scores of 34.825 and 34.15. Also receiving state-qualifying scores were Hilliker; Brown and Thurmas-Dupius in the Silver Division, and Hartman, Cline, Spelker and Bugge in the Gold Division.
Girls basketball Crescent 64, Lake Quinault 17
JOYCE — The Crescent girls basketball team improved to 4-1 on the season with a 64-17 win over Lake Quinault this weekend.
The Loggers had seven girls with at least six points.
Crescent got 15 points from Kaylen Mason and 10 from JoCy Kazlahskas.
Katelyn Dunavant had eight points, while Makiah Clark had seven. Peyton Fieldsend, Naomii Sprague and Alexis Dunavant all chipped in six points.
The Loggers played Monday after press deadline against Crosspoint Academy and next play Wednesday at Northwest Yeshiva.
