BELLINGHAM — The Port Angeles gymnastics squad placed third out of five schools at the Sehome Invitational in Bellingham.
Schools competing at the event were Ballard, Sehome, Bellingham and Squalicum. Port Angeles’ team is a mix of Port Angeles and Sequim high school girls that train together but compete as separate teams.
Ballard won the event with 164.95 points, while Sehome was second with 147.9 and Port Angeles third at 135.7. Port Angeles’ Cassandra Middlestead was sixth overall with 32.1 points.
Port Angeles and Sequim girls placing in their events were:
Vault — Middlestead, Port Angeles, seventh, 8.1; Emma Sharp, Sequim, eighth, 8.05.
Bars — Middlestead, fifth, 7.3.
Beam — Emma Sharp, Sequim, sixth, 8.35; Middlestead, seventh, 8.1.
Floor — Middlestead, ninth, 8.6.
The team’s next meet is against North Kitsap at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Breidablik Elementary in Poulsbo.

Ocosta 63, Forks 46
OCOSTA — The Forks girls played better after a rough league loss to Elma last week, but they couldn’t quite recover from a tough first quarter in a 63-46 nonleague loss to Ocosta.
Coach David Hurn said Ocosta forced a number of turnovers to get out to a 10-0 lead to start the game. “I was a little worried. That’s what Elma did.”
However, after a timeout, the Spartan girls bounced back and played Ocosta fairly even the rest of the game.
“We cut down the turnovers, took care of the ball better,” said Hurn. “We missed some open shots.”
Chloe Leverington scored 13 to lead the Spartans. Jayden Olson had 12, Rian Peters 11 and Iesha Johnson eight.
Forks (0-1, 8-4) will next return to league play, playing at Hoquiam on Tuesday.

QUILCENE — The Quilcene girls were left struggling to gain traction in league with a pair of losses this weekend, 33-14 to Auburn Adventist and 47-20 to Mount Rainier Lutheran.
“Consistency to play to our ability seems to be the struggle in January so far for the Rangers. Unfortunately, we took a couple strides backwards in this one. Our defense had mental lapses and our offense struggled. Too many turnovers [31] plagued us as well,” said coach Brianna Weller.
“We continue to work on making adjustments to the game. These kids are young and new to the game. They are doing well for where they are at skill set wise. We take one day at a time, one practice at a time, one game at a time,” Weller said.
Gina Brown led the Rangers in Saturday’s game with seven points and 10 rebounds. Abby Weller added four points, three assists, three steals, and a block.
The Rangers also lost a road game Thursday against Mount Rainier Lutheran, but coach Weller thought they played well.
“Even though the Rangers came away from Tacoma with a loss to a talented … team, they left with the knowledge that they played well for their youth and skill set,” Weller said.
Our 1-2-2 zone is coming along. The girls are finally starting to understand their assignments in this configuration. Now the main challenge out of the zone for us is rebounding (making contact and boxing out).
Gina Brown scored 11 points and had seven rebounds and two blocks. Abby Weller scored four points, four rebounds and three blocks. Sydney Brown had eight rebounds and five steals.
Despite the tough weekend, the Rangers remain in second place in the SeaTac 1B league (4-2, 5-5). The Rangers play the Sequim JV at 6 p.m. today at home.

at Hoquiam Invite
HOQUIAM — The Port Angeles wrestlers finished third at the Hoquiam Invitational with seven Roughriders placing.
Finishing second in their weight classes at the Saturday meet were Scott Hedin at 113 pounds, Riley Gale at 160, Corey Danielson at 182 and Bailey White at 220.
Finishing third in their weight classes were Josh Boe at 113 pounds, Dominick Timperio at 194 pounds and Daniel Basden at 120 pounds.
The Port Angeles wrestlers have a home dual meet at 7 p.m. Thursday against Port Angeles.
