BREMERTON — The Port Angeles girls soccer team broke out of scoring slump on Thursday night, defeating Bremerton on the road 6-0.
The Roughriders’ six goals matched their totals from the previous four games and helped Port Angeles keep pace in the Olympic League 2A title race.
Port Angeles dominated throughout the game, ending with 17 shots on goal to zero for Bremerton. Mia Gagnon got the scoring going when she settled a Bailee Larson corner kick and put the ball in from 12 yards out.
The next two goals were Izzy Felton breakaways with assists from Catie Brown and Ava Sheahan.
“Izzy was very calm on those goals — she took the right angles to set up her shot and place the ball expertly,” said coach Scott Moseley.
Catie Brown took control of the stat sheet in the second half, earning two more assists and a goal of her own, one to Gagon on her second goal and the other to Anna Petty on a breakaway.
Petty returned the favor with an assist nine minutes later to Brown in front of the goal, where she scored with a low left-footed shot.
Moseley credited the whole team for the shutout.
“We were able to slow down Bremerton’s best player in midfield and limit shots that she might be taking. The very conditions helped some with that, too,” he said.
The game was played under a heavy downpour that made a controlled passing game difficult. It was the seventh shutout on the season and the fifth in the row for the Riders, who have now gone more than 400 straight minutes without allowing a goal.
Next week is busy for the Riders with home games on Monday (North Mason), Tuesday (Kingston) and Thursday (Bremerton) at Peninsula College as they seek to catch North Kitsap and Sequim for the 2A league title. Monday’s game is at 6 p.m., while Tuesday’s and Thursday’s are at 6:45 p.m.
Girls Swimming Bainbridge 131, Port Angeles 54
BAINBRIDGE — The Port Angeles Girls’ Swim and Dive team hit the road Thursday to face their toughest foe to close out the 2021 season. The Bainbridge Spartans showed why they are one of the top programs in class 3A with a 131-54 win over the Riders.
“Bainbridge was the team to race at the end of our season,” said head coach Sally Cole. “They are fast and they have depth which made this meet. A great precursor of what to expect in the postseason. I’m extremely proud of how all the girls performed at this meet, we came away with quite a few personal best times and two more new district qualifying times.”
Kicking off fastest times of the season for the Riders was the 200 medley relay team (Harper McGuire, Mackenzie DuBois, Yau Fu and Sage Hunter), improving their previous district qualifying time by two seconds.
Senior and co-captain Anne Edwards had the only first-place finish for Port Angeles, winning the dive competition with 193.60 points, her best six-dive score this year. Her inward 1½-somersault secured the lead, contributing 40 points toward her total.
Freshman Brooke St. Luise added another district qualifying time to her other three in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 1 minutes, 13.34 seconds, an improvement of five seconds.
Senior and co-captain Emilie Reid also earned a district qualifying time in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 6:36.74.
DuBois, Port Angeles’ only two-event state qualifier, dropped time in both the 200 Individual Medley, and 100 Breast.
Port Angeles will host the Olympic League Divisional Girls Swimming and Diving Invitational at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Shore Aquatic Center.
