POULSBO — The Port Angeles Roughriders girls soccer team traveled to North Kitsap, falling to the second place Vikings 2-1 on a goal in the final seconds of regulation.
The Tuesday game was the Riders’ (2-4, 3-4) fourth straight loss.
“We started the season well but since then have lost three one-goal games,” said Rider Coach Scott Moseley.
North Kitsap did not appear as strong as previous seasons, but took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a long through ball that the Vikings were able to put away.
With 15 minutes left in the first half, the Riders stepped up their game and put more pressure on the Vikings. Midfielder Taylar Clark won a free kick on the left side from 25 yards out and her boot was bobbled by the Vikings goalkeep and midfielder Kyrsten McGuffey knocked in the rebound.
The game see-sawed back and forth, with equal chances for both teams, according to Moseley. The Vikings ended with eight shots, while Port Angeles had six. Five of the Riders’ shots were on goal, while the Vikings had three.
The Riders’ final shot was a heartbreaker. After another long though ball, Olympic league-leading scorer Briann George outraced the Port Angeles defense and scored with only 10 seconds left. “Our defense played so well all night and to give up such a disappointing goal is frustrating. The result doesn’t reflect the Riders’ skill and determination,” said Moseley.
Moseley named McGuffey as offensive player of the game, Clark as transition player and Shanzi Cosgrove as defensive standout.
The Riders travel to Coupeville today for the first-ever match between the two schools.
Volleyball North Kitsap 3, Port Angeles 0
POULSBO — The Roughriders were swept by first-place North Kitsap 25-14, 25-9, 25-12 on the road. The Vikings have yet to lose an Olympic 2A League match.
Kiana Robideau led Port Angeles (4-2, 5-2) Tuesday with six kills, while Callie Hall had 12 assists.
Brennan Gray had five digs, while Nikki Price, Natalie Steinman, and Robideau all had three digs.
Aeverie Politika had three kills and Nizhoni Wheeler had two kills.
The Roughrider girls will attempt to rebound at their next match at Coupeville today.
Coupeville 3, Chimacum 1
CHIMACUM — The Chimacum volleyball team lost a tough match at home to Coupeville 3-1 in its Olympic 1A League opener.
The Cowboys (0-1, 3-6) were beaten 25-7, 23-25, 25-19, 25-16 on Tuesday.
According to coach James Shingleton, the Cowboys started slow in set 1 with too many errors on serve receive. They were able to recover in the second set and led at times through the third and fourth sets, but could not finish off Coupeville.
Shingleton noted excellent play from Emily Thomas with 13 kills and 12 digs, Mechelle Nisbet with 13 digs, Shanya Nisbet with 12 kills and 10 digs, Chloe Patterson with seven blocks and 25 digs from libero Ericka Lindgren.
The Cowboys host Crescent at 6:15 p.m. on Monday.
