BREMERTON — The Port Angeles girls swim team finished fifth in the annual Swimvitational Meet in Bremerton this weekend.
The event featured 11 schools, with each squad limited to eight swimmers, creating a more intense and strategic competition. East Jefferson, getting a strong meet from Akeyla Behrenfeld, finished ninth.
Brooke St. Luise emerged as the Roughriders’ top scorer as she was part of three relay teams that placed. She also placed in the 100 backstroke.
Meanwhile, Mia Francis and Danika Asgeirsson both achieved personal bests — Francis in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, and Asgeirsson in the 100 backstroke.
The meet started with a thrilling 200 medley relay, where the Port Angeles team of St. Luise, Lizzy Shaw, Amayah Nelson and Asgeirsson finished third. In a nailbiting finish, the Riders narrowly edged out Bremerton by 0.37 seconds.
Nelson continued her strong form, taking fifth in the 200 freestyle. Chloe Kay-Sanders added to the team’s momentum with two 10th-place finishes, first in the 200 individual medley and then in the 100 butterfly. Nelson also impressed in the grueling 500 freestyle, grabbing fourth, while Emerson DuBois finished 11th.
The Riders’ 200 free relay team of Asgeirsson, St. Luise, Lynzee Reid and Shaw earned sixth place. In the 100 backstroke, St. Luise finished eighth and Asgeirsson ninth.
In the 100 breaststroke, Shaw secured sixth place, with Francis close behind in eighth. The competition wrapped up with the 400 free relay, where the team of Nelson, St. Luise, Asgeirsson and Reid clinched fourth.
East Jefferson
The Rivals’ Behrenfeld had an outstanding meet, going up against primarily 2A and 3A schools. She finished tied for fifth in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 100 freestyle.
Serena Hanby-Perless also had a solid meet for East Jefferson, finishing ninth in the 200 freestyle and 10th in the 500 freestyle.
The East Jefferson 400 freestyle relay team of Behrenfeld, Hanby-Perless, Stella Bosley and Ursula Schmidt came in seventh out of 14 teams.
Gig Harbor won the meet with 260 points. Port Angeles had a solid 138 points, well ahead of sixth-place Olympic (101). East Jefferson finished with 40.5 points.
Cross Country Sequim at Olympic League meet
BAINBRIDGE — Sequim’s Dawn Hulstedt finished seventh at an Olympic League 5K cross-country meet held at Battle Point Park this weekend.
Hulstedt finished with a time of 20 minutes, 58.08 seconds. Her high finish came after a fifth-place finish (20:01.8) in the varsity silver division at the Nike Hole in the Wall run on Oct. 12 in Lakewood. Bridget Pyeatt finished 20th with a time of 23:09.01 and Manuela Valle Jover was 26th (24:21.72). Rounding out the girls, Aspen Goldner was 40th in 26:08.96, Amelie Martin 62nd (34:21.7) and Sophia Rhynes 65th (36:11.98).
For the young boys team, which is mostly freshmen and sophomores, freshman Johnathan Tipton led the way in 38th with a time of 19:10.98.
Westley French was 41st (19:25.16), Adrian Osborune 43rd (19:27.87), Billy Struve 51st (19:43.13), Joshua Wakefield 54th (19:56.26), Jackson Hines 57th (20:00.15), Brandon Bair 90th (21:41.38), Ryker Rossi 101st (22:37.48) and Taylor Wolslegal 122nd (25:45.24).
The Sequim boys finished sixth and the girls fifth.
The Sequim and Port Angeles boys and girls will compete Thursday at Cedars at Dungeness in the Olympic League Cross-Country Championships. The boys varsity race begins at 4:30 p.m. and the girls race begins at 5 p.m.
