PORT ANGELES — A solid first half put Port Angeles in position to stay in sole control of the Olympic League’s Class 2A boys soccer standings, but the Roughriders couldn’t hang on in a 4-1 loss to North Kitsap.
“It was a good end-to-end game with both teams creating some chances back and forth,” coach Chris Saari said.
“The Vikings are a good skilled passing team and had a lot of the possession throughout the match. Port Angeles played their best game of the season so far and showed flashes of excellent passing themselves.”
The Riders went up 1-0 just before halftime.
“In the 38th minute, Matthew Miller finished a low cross from the left side from his brother Jacob that came across the goal mouth,” Saari said. “Matthew positioned himself well and it was a great pass from his brother that Matthew was able to tap in with the inside of his foot.”
North Kitsap seized momentum and the lead with a pair of goals in relatively quick succession — an open netter in the 47th minute and off a free kick in the 53rd minute.
“In the 53rd minute, the Vikings got a breakaway in behind the Port Angeles defense from midfield and it was a foot race toward the Riders goal,” Saari said. Defender Zak Alton did the best he could with the situation, but as the Viking player cut across his body with the ball, Zak fouled the attacker and it was deemed a professional foul red card (ejection) from the game.”
Playing with 10 players the rest of the game, the Riders created some chances but were unable to equalize the score.
“North Kitsap weathered the storm and wore the shorthanded Riders down late in the game,” Saari said.
The Vikings found the net in the 72nd minute on a shot that was saved by Marcus Hogan but then rebounded right to a North Kitsap player who finished it and also added a 75th minute goal.
“I didn’t think the score was reflective of how the game went and how the teams matchup,” Saari said.“Our kids never gave up and they really played their best game of the season.”
Matthew Miller was offensive player of the match after he scored his ninth goal of the season and sparked Port Angeles up front with his dribbling and passing skills.
Jacob Miller played his best game of the season, according to Saari to earn transition player of the match.
And goalkeeper Marcus Hogan had several big saves for the Riders, including a series of shots late in the first half.
Port Angeles (3-2-0, 4-2-0) visits Bainbridge on Friday.
East Jefferson 6, Seattle Christian 0
PORT TOWNSEND — Freshman Armando Sanchez sparked the Rivals, scoring the team’s first two goals and assisting on a third score in a win Tuesday at Memorial Field.
“He joined us recently and is a really, really good player, smart and skilled,” coach Robert Cantley said.
“The second goal came on a header off a corner kick. He’s a pretty little guy, too, so he got in there.”
Connor Scanlon notched a third East Jefferson goal on a Sanchez assist for a 3-0 halftime lead.
Senior Isaac Gurney’s rebound goal into an open net put the Rivals up 4-0.
Scanlon, who assisted on Sanchez’s first score, added a second goal later on and freshman Finn Evans rounded out the goal scorers for the Rivals (3-3-0, 3-4-0).
East Jefferson visits Bellevue Christian on Friday.

PORT LUDLOW — Nate Anderson led the way with a nine-hole round of 46 as the Riders edged the Vikings at Port Ludlow Golf Club. Austin Worthington shot a 47 and Phoenix Flores and Cale Wentz each shot 49 for Port Angeles (3-0).
Port Angeles hosts Sequim today at Peninsula Golf Course.
