PUYALLUP — Playing a makeup game from a contest canceled several weeks ago, the Port Angeles basketball girls took a break from league play with their their ninth straight win 48-26 over Cascade Christian.
“I felt our kids showed outstanding toughness in bouncing back from a physically draining game the night before against Kingston. Our zone defenses were consistently solid throughout the game, and our rebounding was strong,” said coach Michael Poindexter.
Cheyenne Wheeler led the Roughriders with 15 points, while Millie Long scored nine and Jaida Wood seven. The tough Riders defense kept Cascade Christian to single digits in every quarter.
“We struggled on offense, perhaps due to general fatigue. Shots were a bit off, and we tended to over-pass, especially inside. Given the effort we showed against Kingston, combined with the long ride to Puyallup the next day for an afternoon game, I was impressed at how well we performed,” Poindexter said.
Natalie Steinman led the team with six rebounds and four steals. Mikkiah Brady had five steals, while Long had five rebounds and four steals.
Madison Cooke and Devin Edwards contributed five rebounds each.
Port Angeles (9-1, 15-3, No. 9 in RPI) goes on the road at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a monster game against North Kitsap (10-0, 15-3). If the girls win, they will be in a tie with the Vikings for first place in the Olympic League 2A Division. Earlier this season, North Kitsap beat Port Angeles 48-41.

Quilcene 34, Crosspoint 30
CHICO — A young Quilcene squad went up against an experienced Crosspoint team on Friday, beating the Warriors 34-30 on the road.
The Rangers had three freshmen and four sophomores going up against Crosspoint’s eight juniors and seniors in Friday’s game, but outrebounded the older team 18 to 10. The Rangers had 12 steals and converted 14 points off 25 turnovers. They also shot 86 percent from the free-throw line.
Abby Weller led the team with 16 points and four assists. Gina Brown had eight points and nine rebounds, while Sydney Brown had eight rebounds, six points and three steals. Brittney Beukes added six rebounds and three steals.
Quilcene also lost to first-place Mount Rainier Lutheran on Saturday 51-27.
The Rangers (7-5, 9-9) finished in second place in the Sea-Tac 1B West League. The Rangers next play at the North Kitsap C Team at 6:30 p.m. today.
They begin postseason play on Saturday hosting the Sea-Tac 1B League East No. 3 seed, which will be either Muckleshoot or Northwest Yeshiva.

Mount Rainier Lutheran 56, Quilcene 37
PARKLAND — Quilcene played a tough Mount Rainier Lutheran team even in the second half, improving over a 39-point loss to the same team earlier this season.
After getting up 37-19 at the half, Mount Rainier Lutheran was able to win 56-37. Robert Comstock III led the Rangers with 13 points while Holdem Elkins scored seven.
“It was nice to see them play pretty even with them in the second half,” said coach Richie French. “We’re starting to get better It’s been a long year.”
Quilcene (0-12, 1-18) wraps up its regular season with a game Tuesday at Christian Faith. The Rangers get to play an play-in postseason game in the Sea-Tac Tournament, playing Rainier Christian (3-9, 3-14) from the Sea-Tac 1B East League. That game will be on Thursday at Rainier Christian. Rainier Christian nipped the Rangers 66-58 earlier this season.

Port Townsend at Klahowya Tournament
PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend picked up several high places at the Klahowya Tournament on Saturday, with all six boys attending the tournament winning medals.
Ryan Caldwell had the best showing, finishing second at 182 pounds. Dalen Ufford (160), Dylan Tracer (170), Kyle Caldwell (195) and Tucker Booth (285) all finished third in their weight classes, while Carter Swartout finished fifth at 113.
Saturday, the Port Townsend boys begin wrestling in subregionals at Vashon. The top four in each class will move on to the regional tournament on Feb. 10.
The girls will wrestle at Jefferson in Auburn on Friday and Saturday in their subregional. The top five will move on to regionals on Feb. 10.
