FORKS — Forks figured out how to break Ilwaco’s press early on, but it couldn’t adapt when the Fishermen switched to zone defense in a 58-38 Pacific League boys basketball loss.
“First quarter we did a good job of breaking their press and getting some buckets,” Spartans coach Rick Gooding said. “Then Ilwaco went and sat in a zone, and to get a team out of a zone, you have to hit some shots, and we didn’t shoot the ball well. We made one 3-pointer [all game].”
Senior Riley Pursley made his season debut for Forks (2-1, 2-4) and had 19 points to lead all scorers.
“Ilwaco (4-0, 5-0) is a good team. We played hard and they still beat us by 20,” Gooding said. “They have a good point guard, some good size with 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-5 guys, and they moved the ball well against us.”
Former Forks coach Bob Enos leads the Fishermen.
“He coached at Forks for 27 years and he does a great job,” Gooding said.
Forks is scheduled to host Hoquiam in a nonleague matchup of former Evergreen League foes at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

JOYCE — The Loggers fell at home in a game played earlier this week.
Payton Fieldsend led Crescent with six points, while Jocy Kazlauskas and Kaylen Mason each added four points.
Crescent (4-2) visits Mary M. Knight on Saturday.
Wrestling Rivals win big
SILVERDALE — East Jefferson’s boys and girls wrestling squads each picked up solid wins over its Klahowya counterparts in a Nisqually League contest Wednesday.
“This was a very dominant win for both teams,” Rivals coach Steve Grimm said. “The coaches are beyond proud.”
The East Jefferson girls took down the Eagles 24-12.
Winning by pin were Melody Douglas, Summer Shoop, Mi Amada Lanphear-Ramirez and Savannah Hoffman.
“Lanphear-Ramirez beat a state-ranked opponent with a throw and pin,” Grimm said. “She is a first-year sophomore wrestler with lot of potential. And Savanna Hoffmann, a state-ranked wrestler herself, won by pin.”
The Rivals boys earned a 42-30 win over Klahowya, but the final point total is a bit misleading.
“The boys technically only lost one match all night, including exhibitions,” Grimm said. “The only reason the score was close was because of forfeit points we gave up [for not having wrestlers at certain weight classes].”
Winning by pin were Gabe Evans, Sam Lampert, Logan Massie, Gage Barry, Devon Bennett-Anderson, Elliott Pflueger, Lars Wakefield and Beau Manual.
“We had a lot of kids come from behind and win,” Grimm said. “I was very proud to witness our toughness and determination. It was inspirational to watch, especially the girls.”
East Jefferson is next scheduled to wrestle at the Battle for the Axe in Port Angeles on Jan. 8.

KINGSTON — The Wolves’ Olympic League match with the Buccaneers was called off due to illness, Sequim coach Chad Cate said.
