FORKS — The Forks volleyball team moved on in the Southwest 2B District tournament with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-22) sweep over Rainier.
With the win, the Spartans (5-2) move on the second round, a match at home Wednesday against Napavine. If the Spartans can win that game, they move on to the Southwest 2B championship Saturday.
Leading the Spartans was Kyra Neel with 10 kills and three blocks, while Kaidence Rigby had seven kills and four blocks. Kesia Rowley had 17 assists from the setter position and two aces serving. Kadie Wood had four kills and Kray Horton, normally the team’s setter, was moved to outside hitter and responded with five kills.
Coach Jenn LeDuke said the girls are happy to still be playing.
“They had a blast yesterday,” she said. LeDuke said Wednesday’s match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
Port Angeles 3, Olympic 1
SILVERDALE — The Roughriders went to four games (25-22, 28-26, 21-25, 25-12) to beat Olympic on Saturday to give themselves an overall winning record heading into the final regular-season match of the year.
The Roughriders also won a fifth game 15-10.
The Riders won two tough, close games in a row to take a 2-0 lead, then battled back from a deep hole to nearly win Game 3.
“We came out strong today. The entire program worked together to create a positive atmosphere,” said coach Jennifer Reynolds. “Varsity won games one and two but Olympic came out strong in game three, quickly increasing their lead to 10 points. We focused on our small game and winning the little point battles. Then Senior Camille Stensgard, serving 25 of 26 overall, closed the gap with a seven-point, three-ace service run to tie things up. Olympic stayed strong and sent us into game four.
“We came out in game four ready to play. We had near-perfect serving, which kept the momentum in our favor. Setter Zoe Smithson had a seven-point serving run while sophomore Lily Halberg had a run of her own, serving six in a row with three aces,” Reynolds said.
Overall, Smithson served 18 of 19 with 22 assists, five kills and seven digs, while Halberg served 100 percent (19 for 19) with six aces, four kills and 15 digs.
Emi Halberg was all over the court on offense and defense, Reynolds said, adding 19 digs and 11 kills. Jaida Wood had four stuff blocks, five kills and two digs. Sam Robbins had six kills. Savannah Bray had nine digs one ace and one kill and junior and Kennedy Bruch added seven digs.
The Port Angeles JV scores were 25-9, 25-10, 25-21 and the Riders’ C team also won.
Port Angeles has its final league match Tuesday at Klahowya.
