FORKS — The Forks volleyball team came from behind twice to prevail in a five-set marathon match over former Evergreen A League foe Hoquiam 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 15-12).
The match featured 212 points and lasted for 2 hours, 10 minutes. It was the Spartans’ first victory of the year, though two of their losses were in close, marathon 3-2 matches against Neah Bay and Mount Vernon Christian, two 1B powerhouses in volleyball. They also lost 3-0 to Hoquiam in the first match of the year.
Coach Jenn LeDuke was pleased with her players’ mental toughness after falling behind 1-0 and then later 2-1 to Hoquiam.
“For a coach, it’s really good to see them mentally holding strong,” LeDuke said.
LeDuke said Avery Dilley was “swinging and blocking on the outside” and had one her best outings of the year. Keana Rowley was also active blocking “and the placement on her hits were huge.”
LeDuke also said Aladia Hernandez-Stansbury and Karee Neel were big factors on defense and Bailey Johnson and Erika Williams were doing a great job setting.
Forks (1-3) next hosts East Jefferson (3-3) at 7:15 p.m. today.
Sequim 3, Olympic 0
OLYMPIC — Sequim beat Olympic 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-18) to remain near the top of the Olympic League standings.
“It was actually a pretty close game. We had to play well, or at least consistent,” said coach Jennie Webber-Heilman.
The Wolves served 90 percent and had eight aces.
Rose Gibson served 9-for-10 with two aces, four kills, two blocks and nine digs, while Sophia Greenleaf served 13-for-13.
Kassi Montero had two aces, five digs and four kills, while Tiffany Lam had nine digs.
Kenzi Berglund had a big match, serving 13-for-13 with 17 assists and 13 digs. “She was hustling all over the place,” said Webber-Heilman.
Brianna Palenik served 6-for-6 with four kills and five digs, while Arianna Stovall had four kills, five digs and two blocks. “And those were huge blocks, [Olympic] was hitting it hard,” Webber-Heilman said.
The victory moves the Wolves to 3-1 in league (3-2 overall) behind powerhouse North Kitsap and new 2A powerhouse Bainbridge.
Sequim next hosts Port Angeles (0-4, 0-5) at 6:30 p.m. today.
North Kitsap 3, Port Angeles 0
POULSBO — First place North Kitsap swept Port Angeles 3-0 in volleyball.
The Vikings, a perennial powerhouse in volleyball, improved to 4-0 on the season, tied on top of the Olympic League standings with Bainbridge.
The Riders (0-4, 0-5) play at Sequim at 6:30 p.m. today.
Boys Tennis Port Angeles 6, Olympic 1
BREMERTON — The Port Angeles boys tennis team improved to 4-1 on the season with another convincing victory, this time over Olympic.
The Roughriders won six matches out of seven.
The lone victory for Olympic came from the Trojans’ No. 1 singles player, undefeated Jonah Pantig, who beat Port Angeles’ No. 1 Tate Alton 6-2, 6-0.
The Riders won the rest of the matches without losing a single set.
Coach Brian Gundersen singled out No. 2 singles player Sky Gelder for his 6-1, 6-0 victory over Roger Gasow.
“Sky is a very cerebral player and does a great job diagnosing his opponents strengths and weaknesses. He is usually playing an older player only being a sophomore, but he is a competitor and had a great match today,” Gundersen said.
A Port Angeles match against Bremerton on Wednesday was rained out. The Riders are next scheduled to play at home at 4 p.m. today against Kingston, weather permitting.
