PREP ROUNDUP: Forks softball sweeps a pair in the wind

COUPEVILLE — The Forks softball girls showed no rust after a long spring break layoff, surviving howling winds on Whidbey Island to sweep a pair from Coupeville 10-0 and 12-0.

Coach Dennis Dean said there were gusting winds blowing straight in from center field “that caused some strange ball movement” for the two games.

A trio of Spartan pitchers gave up just four hits in the two games.

Brittney Dean started the first game, going five innings, striking out nine with three hits and no walks. Jayden Olson pitched the sixth, giving up no hits and no walks.

Rian Peters went 2-4 with a double, a home run and 3 RBIs.

In the second game, Chloe Leverington, usually a closer, got the start, going five innings with 10 strikeouts, one hit and one walk.

Olsen went 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, while Leverington went 2 for 3 with a double and Natalie Lausche went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Samantha Winger also went 2 for 2.

Forks (0-1, 7-2) has shown it’s an outstanding team outside of league, but the Evergreen 1A League is one of the toughest 1A softball leagues in the state if not the toughest, so the Spartans will have to battle to make postseason (Forks, Montesano, Hoquiam and Elma have combined for three losses outside of league).

Forks resumes league play at defending state champion Montesano (1-0, 5-0) at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
