FORKS — The Forks softball girls went up against Elma, which finished second in the state last year, and showed that they can go toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the state, though in the end errors hurt the Spartans in a 2-1 loss.
“Man, what a heartbreaker. We made a couple of errors that cost us,” said coach Dennis Dean. “Most important, we played the state champions runners up tough.”
Forks also lost to Elma 7-5 earlier this season. That’s two close losses to a 16-1 team.
The Spartans’ lone run was scored on a Rian Peters home run. Dean said the next time Peters came up, Elma intentionally walked her and was able to get three straight outs.
Britney Dean pitched a complete game. She struck out eight and allowed just six singles. Dean also hit a double, while Natalie Lausche had a single.
Forks (2-5, 7-7) next plays at Hoquiam (3-4, 6-7) battling for third place in the Evergreen 1A League. The Evergreen League will send five teams to district, so the Spartans will make postseason out of an exceptionally difficult league.

Elma 2, Forks 1, PKs
FORKS — The Spartans badly wanted to beat the Eagles at home Friday. It was mostly a game of pride as the Spartans had already locked up the Evergreen 1A title.
The Spartans and Eagles battled to a 1-1 tie after regulation, and Elma was able to squeak past Forks 5-4 in penalty kicks.
“They came in with more to win than we had to lose,” said coach Joe Morton. With the win, Elma picks up the No. 2 seed out of the Evergreen 1A League. The Spartans were already firmly locked in to the No. 1 seed.
Oscar Gonzalez scored the Spartans’ goal in regulation. Scoring penalty kicks were Teo Ayala, Luis Perez, Tony Flores, Hugo Sandoval.
Forks (10-2, 11-4) is done with regular-season play. The Spartans begin their postseason run hosting La Center (5-7, 7-9) at 5:30 p.m. in their Southwest District 4 1A opener.
Sequim golf
BURLINGTON — Sequim golfers competed at the 38th annual Bill Egbers Memorial Tournament at Skagit Valley Golf & Country Club Friday.
The event brings together the top prep golf teams in the state.
As Olympic League champions, the Wolves earned an automatic invitation.
Golfers compete in an 18-hole morning round, wait for the cut line to be established, and if qualified, advance to play an 18-hole afternoon round.
Paul Jacobsen was the lone Sequim golfer to advance to the afternoon. He posted a morning round of 7-over-par 79 and followed up with an 84 in the afternoon.
The cut line was 80.
Blake Wiker shot an 82, Ben Sweet had an 85, Liam Payne added an 89 and Dom Riccobene carded a 95.
Jacobsen, Wiker and Sweet all qualified for the Class 2A state tournament last week during the Olympic League Golf Championships at The Cedars at Dungeness.
Payne qualified for the district meet May 15 and still has a shot to join his teammates at state.
