FORKS — The Spartans’ Janessa Ramos stopped numerous Ocosta shots in a tight defensive soccer battle as Forks fell to the Wildcats 1-0 on Monday.
Coach Tracy Gillette said Ramos deserved a shout out for her effort.
“Last night was tough, but great,” Gillette said. “The entire team worked well together and kept fighting until the end.”
Forks was coming off its best game of the year, a 4-1 win over the weekend against LaConner. Maria Francisco, Julia Raupp and Katelynn Wallerstedt scored goals. Marysleidy Hernandez-Beltran scored after her own penalty kick. The penalty kick failed, but she was able to score on a second attempt.
Forks (1-3) will look to keep up its momentum, next playing at Winlock (0-6) on Friday.

SEATTLE — The Port Angeles football team will be facing the No. 7-ranked team in the state Friday in the latest Associated Press poll, the third top-10 team the Roughriders have faced so far this season.
The Riders (3-2), coming off their first win over Olympic in 12 years by a 48-26 score, will play the Bremerton Knights at 7 p.m. Friday in Bremerton (5-0), which just beat North Mason 63-0. Giving the Riders confidence is the fact that Bremerton barely beat Olympic 37-36 earlier this year.
Port Angeles has already played No. 3-ranked Anacortes and No. 6-ranked North Kitsap, which has a loss to No. 1-ranked Tumwater. The Riders actually played North Kitsap tough through the entire first half, but lost contact with the Vikings in the second half in a 51-20 loss. Sequim plays North Kitsap on Oct. 20 and Bremerton on Oct. 26.
Forks (4-1), after losing on the road to Raymond by a score of 40-21, dropped in the 2B poll down to No. 10. Raymond is ranked No. 5. Forks gets to play No. 8-ranked Pe Ell/Willapa Valley (4-1) on Oct. 20 and No. 2-ranked Napavine (4-1) on Oct. 26.
At the 1B level, Neah Bay (3-2), after three straight wins has climbed to No. 5. The Red Devils lost to defending state champion and No. 1-ranked Liberty Bell in the season opener.
Graham-Kapowsin is the No. 1-ranked 4A school, O’Dea is the No. 1-ranked 3A school, Royal is the top 1A school and Okanogan is No. 1 in 2B. Bainbridge was in the top 10 in the 3A poll but was beaten last week by North Kitsap.
