PREP ROUNDUP: Forks soccer beats Bremerton to go to 3-0 on season

FORKS — After three games this season, the Forks soccer boys are not only undefeated, they have yet to give up a goal.

In fact, after Saturday’s 4-0 win over Bremerton, the Spartans have outscored their opponent 21-0. Two out of those three wins were against 2A opponents — Bremerton and Lakewood.

The best part of the story is Forks is a very young team, playing seven freshmen and three sophomores, so the Spartans are just going to get better.

Gabe Terrones got the shutout in goal Saturday. Goal scorers were Oscar Gonzalez, Hugo Sandoval (on a penalty kick), Tony Flores and Luis Perez. Coach Joe Morton said Flores’ goal came on a “beautiful cross by [Gonzalez],” who picked up the assist.

Forks (0-0, 3-0) next hosts Port Townsend (0-0, 0-1) at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Port Angeles 7, Lake Washington 6

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders rallied with thre runs in the sixth inning to get past 3A Lake Washington at Civic Field, remaining undefeated on the season.

“I thought the pitchers did a great job of filling up the zone and forcing them to be aggressive,” said coach Karl Myers.

“They have some impressive hitters in their lineup and I felt our pitchers handled them well and defense got outs when given opportunities,” said coach Karl Myers.

Carson Jackson and Brody Merrit each went 2-3 with a double and combined for six RBIs. Down two runs, Jackson hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to score Colton McGuffey and Ethan Flodstrom to make the game 6-6. Merritt then promptly had a base hit to center to score Jackson with what turned out to be the winning run.

Brady Shimko came in in the seventh for his second save of the year. He gave up a leadoff walk, but shut down the Kangaroos in the rest of the seventh to secure the win.

“It was a fun day for the program and it was a great environment at the ballpark, really proud of our guys for battling from multiple deficits against a really strong Lake Washington team,” Myers said.

In addition to Jackson and Merritt’s hitting, McGuffey also had a hit, scored two runs and collected an RBI.

Port Angeles (1-0, 3-0) next plays at Bremerton (0-1, 1-2) at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

SEQUIM — The Sequim baseball boys couldn’t muster much offense, getting five-hit by a pair of Aberdeen pitchers in a 5-3 loss at home.

Johnnie Young had a pair of singles for the Wolves and a run scored. Cameron Welcher had a hit and Sequim’s lone RBI on the day. Ian Miller and Michael Grubb had the other hits for Sequim.

The Aberdeen duo of Giovanni Pisani and Kylan Touch were effective against the Wolves, allowing just the five hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Elandon Washburn had a good sixth and seventh inning pitching for Sequim, keeping the Wolves close as they tried to fight back from a 5-1 deficit. Washburn pitched two scoreless innings, giving up three hits and no walks.

Sequim (1-0, 2-2) has had a busy start to its season as the Wolves will play their fifth game in a week at 4 p.m. today at Forks (0-0).

FORKS — The Forks softball girls split a doubleheader against 2B power Ocosta, winning 7-4 after losing the first game 9-5.

In the nightcap, Britney Dean and Bailey Kratzer each went 3 for 4 for the Spartans, while Eliahna Kilmer went 2-3. Jayden Olsen pitched the first five innings, scattering eight hits and four runs while freshman Chloe Leverington picked up the save, pitching the final two innings with one run allowed.

In the opening game of the twin bill, Jayden Olson was 2 for 4 and Natalie Lausche was 2 for 4 with a double. In that game, Leverington pitched four inning and took the loss, but struck out seven batters. Dean started the game and struck out six in three innings as the two girls combined for 13 Ks.

Forks played the games without most of its seniors, who were attending a senior scholarship auction. Ocosta made it to the state 2B semifinals last year and has most of the players back from that team, said coach Dennis Dean.

On Thursday, Forks beat Sequim 7-1. The Spartans got a three-run home run from Olson and a home run and two RBIs from Rian Peters. Dean. Olson and Leverington combined to give up three hits and one walk while striking out seven.
