PREP ROUNDUP: Forks soccer and softball teams win playoff games

FORKS — The Forks Spartans found themselves in a tough soccer battle with a good squad from Columbia Adventist on Tuesday.

The Spartans entered the half tied 0-0 but found their game halfway through the second half, getting goals from Juan Pablo Flores and David Avalos to win 2-0.

The win sends the Spartans to the semifinals of the 1A Southwest District Tournament.

“I think the nerves got the best of them early,” said coach Ismael Ramos. “In the second half, they started figuring it out and it was halfway through the second half.”

Tony Flores-Hernandez played a role in both goals, picking up an assist. Flores-Hernandez found Flores with a “perfect through ball,” Ramos said.

Flores-Hernandez also had a shot deflected that Avalos gobbled up on a rebound to finish the play for his goal.

Picking up the shutout in goal was Rafael Terrones.

The Spartans will next play at home at 6 p.m. today against La Center. Forks will also play Saturday in Tenino in either the Southwest District championship or the third-place game.

Forks 8, Toledo 3

TOLEDO — The Forks softball team moved ahead in the 2B Southwest District Tournament, winning a road game against Toledo 8-3 on Tuesday.

“We played such an amazing game as a team,” said coach Traci Kratzer.

“We didn’t know what to expect against Toledo. But, the girls played their hearts out. I was a little nervous, but as soon as they hit the field, the lights came on,” Kratzer said.

Chloe Leverington led the Spartans with a two-run home run at the plate and 13 strikeouts from the rubber.

Aspen Rondeau and Colby Rancourt both hit triples and Kadie Wood hit a double for the Spartans.

The Spartans play again on the road in the next round of the tournament against Pe Ell at 4 p.m. today.
