ILWACO — It was a successful trip south as Forks boys basketball sank the Ilwaco Fishermen 60-47 thanks to a solid second quarter.
“They are one of the better teams in the league, so it was cool to go down and prove to ourselves that we are hopefully one of the better teams in the league,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said.
The Spartans turned a three-point deficit into a 31-24 halftime lead as Trey Baysinger scored eight of his team-high 19 points in the second quarter.
“They sent some doubles his way but he still had 19 points and a grip of rebounds,” Gooding said.
Tony Flores got going after halftime, scoring 16 of his 17 points.
“Tony hit a couple of threes which was good to see,” Gooding said. “They had one guy on him and he was getting to the rack and getting some gimmes. He had a more aggressive mindset.”
Gooding said it was a foul-filled, physical contest.
“Everybody is so chippy and eager to be back in the gym,” Gooding said. “We’ve now had three games and three practices and it’s hard to get things installed, so it helps that our group has some experience playing together.”
Forks (3-0) visits Raymond on Monday.

North Kitsap 83, Sequim 48
SEQUIM — The Sequim boys basketball team ran into a buzzsaw in North Kitsap, which showed it will likely be one of the top teams in the Olympic League 2A again with an 83-48 win over the Wolves on Friday.
North Kitsap is the defending 2A state champion and returns several juniors and a couple of seniors from that team.
“They’re big, fast and skilled. They’re a well-oiled machine,” said coach Greg Glasser.
Erik Christiansen led the Wolves with 15 points.
Sequim (0-2) played Saturday against North Mason (0-1) after press deadline.

SILVERDALE — The Wolves won two of four doubles matches and earned a forfeit in a third to push past the Eagles.
Dustan Koch and Henry Hughes earned a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 1 doubles pairing, while Zach McCracken and Jackson Vandewege teamed for a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Garrett Little also won his No. 1 singles match in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
EJ drops pair
CHIMACUM — East Jefferson opened with 7-0 and 6-1 losses to Central Kitsap and Bainbridge while getting more of its roster enough practices to be eligible to play.
“We did win some individual matches that were actually forfeits because players can’t play twice the same day, but we only have eight eligible now,” coach David Porter said.
Carter Cameron won his No. 1 singles match against Bainbridge 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
East Jefferson visits Bremerton on Monday.
