CHIMACUM — The East Jefferson girls basketball team struggled in a nonleague loss against a big and physical Washougal squad in a 69-29 loss.
Coach Lorraine Rimson said her kids played hard and can learn from Washougal’s physical style. The 2A team from suburban Vancouver features five girls 5-foot-10 or taller, and they all have long arms. They played a series of games over the Christmas holiday against Port Angeles, Oak Harbor and East Jefferson, winning two out of three.
“As the score shows, it was an incredibly tough game for us,” Rimson said. “On the bright side, the girls all played incredibly hard. The combination of speed and physical play was new to us, so our hope is that we’ll be better positioned to play the faster, physical teams in our league that are coming up in the next couple of weeks.”
Dylin Shockley led the Rivals with nine points, while Penina Vailolo and Kay Botkin each had five points.
The Rivals (3-1, 3-7), currently third in the Nisqually League, return to league action at Charles Wright (0-5, 0-6) on Wednesday.

MOUNT VERNON — The Neah Bay girls basketball team bounced back from just its second loss of the year by beating Mount Vernon Christian 39-33 in the Saturday finale of the Mount Vernon Christian holiday tournament.
The Red Devils outscored the Hurricanes 12-3 in the fourth quarter to come from behind and win. Neah Bay and Mount Vernon Christian are very familiar with each other as they usually play each other in the district tournament. Neah Bay also beat the Hurricanes at the 1B state tournament last and in 2022, Mount Vernon Christian beat the Red Devils in the state championship game.
Ryanna Moss hit four 3-pointers, including one in the crucial fourth quarter, to lead the Red Devils with 17. Cerise Moss also hit a 3-pointer in the fourth and scored eight.
In Friday’s loss, Neah Bay fell 60-56 to a 10-1 2B Adna team that is ranked No. 2 in the state.
Adna had a big second half to come back on the defending 1B state champion Red Devils, outscoring Neah Bay 38-27 in the final 16 minutes.
Ryanna Moss led Neah Bay with 18 points, while Amber Swan had 12 points and eight rebounds. Cerise Moss had 11 points.
Neah Bay’s only other loss this year was to Rainier, which is ranked No. 1 among 2B schools.
Neah Bay (7-2) next plays Saturday, hosting another good 2B school La Conner (6-3) at 1 p.m.

Boys basketball
Crescent 52, S. Bend 25
SOUTH BEND — The Crescent boys basketball team improved to 10-1 on the season, the Loggers’ best start in at least nine years, with a 52-25 win over South Bend on Saturday.
“It was the first game back after a little break for the holidays and we were a little rusty,” said coach Chris Ferrier. “We played really unselfish and really smart. We just had to push through some fatigue from the time off and keep things pointed in the right direction. Seventeen assists on 20 baskets is pretty awesome and speaks to how much these guys like sharing the ball.”
Conner Bauers led the team with 16 points and caused three turnovers by taking charges. Lukas Love had a monster game with 19 points, 20 rebounds and five assists.
Crescent (10-1) hosts Darrington (3-5) at home at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

MOUNT VERNON — Neah Bay went to overtime to beat Mossyrock 75-70 on Saturday to win a pair of games at the Mount Vernon Christian holiday tournament.
The Red Devils also rode a 23-3 second quarter to beat Mount Vernon Christian 56-46 on Friday.
In Saturday’s victory, Makyah Chambers hit four 3-pointers and led the team with 21 points. Tyler Swan had a huge game with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Jodell Wimberley scored 11, Seactis Woodruff had 10 points and nine rebounds and LeAnthony Jimmicum had nine. The Red Devils overcame 30 points from Mossyrock’s Zackary Munoz.
In Friday’s win, Neah Bay got 22 points from Chambers.
Neah Bay got off to a slow start as the Hurricanes held a 16-6 lead after the first quarter. The Red Devils blew the game open in the second quarter and never let Mount Vernon Christian back into the lead.
Swan had another big game on the boards with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
Neah Bay (4-3) next plays at Muckleshoot (7-2) on Saturday.
