PORT TOWNSEND — Thanks to a one-two finish from Aliyah Cassidy Yearian and Fiona Fraser, the East Jefferson girls took first as a team against a strong Klahowya club in the Rivals’ home cross-country meet held at the Port Townsend Golf Club.
Meanwhile, in the boys’ race, East Jefferson’s Soare Johnston took first place as the Rivals finished second as a team.
Running in wet conditions, Yearian had a time of 19 minutes, 5.09 seconds while Fraser was right behind at 19:10.5. Though this wasn’t Yearian’s or Fraser’s best times, what was most impressive is the girl who finished third behind Yearian and Fraser, Natalie Oathout of Klahowya, was third at the 1A state cross-country championships last year. She finished six seconds behind Fraser.
Yearian has the No. 1 1A girls’ time in the state (18:24.6), set at the Nike Hole in the Wall on Oct. 7 while Fraser has the No. 2 time (18:43.0) set at the John Payne Invitational on Sept. 27.
East Jefferson, which finished fifth at state last year without Yearian, had four of the top 10 finishes and six out of the top 15. Sylvia Butterfield was ninth (22:24.3) and Leah Ferland was 10th (22:45.2).
The Rivals’ Tadu Dollarhide was 14th (23:35.09) and Michael Gregg was 15th (24:03.09). Nola Bertucci was 22nd (26:54.9).
The East Jefferson squad just edged Klahowya with 33 points to the Eagles’ 35 (As in golf, lower scores are better in cross country.). There were four full girls’ teams at the meet.
Johnston won by a healthy gap of 23 seconds. He had a time of 17:01.39 while teammate Henri Huber was sixth with a time of 17:57.5.
The Rivals had six runners in the top 21. Indigo Gould was 16th (19:04.7), Joshua Yearin was 17th (19:05.29), Dustin Hines was 20th (19:14.0) and Noah Isenberg was 21st (19:19.4). Silas Klontz was 32nd (20:46.4) and Nico Errichetti was 34th (21:21.59).
The young Rivals squad with four freshman and a sophomore, had 60 points as Klahowa won the six-team meet with 49.
East Jefferson next runs at the West-Central District meet Oct. 28 at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place.
Volleyball
North Kitsap 3, Sequim 0
POULSBO — The Wolves were slow to acclimate in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-17) loss to the first-place Vikings.
“North came out really strong the first game and we were like, ‘What?’,” coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said. “We regrouped in the second game and played better, but our offense kind of disappeared in that third game. And we also didn’t have a ton of digs in that game.”
Jolene Vaara led the Wolves at the net with 12 kills, five stuff blocks and five digs. She also served 4-for-5 with two perfect passes.
Sydney Clark added 15 assists, five digs and was 8-for-9 on serves with an ace.
Arianna Stovall added four kills and four stuff blocks while still recovering from an ankle injury.
Brianna Palenik added three kills, four digs and two aces on 9-for-10 serving.
Tiffany Lam also had five digs and four perfect passes.
Sequim (8-3, 8-4) visits Bainbridge (9-2, 9-4) tonight.
Olympic 3, Port Angeles 2
BREMERTON — The Riders fell 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 and 15-8) to the Trojans on the road.
“We were super scrappy, we ran quicker attacks offensively to help us get points,” coach Alyssa Wetzler said. “There was a groove that we got into that I liked.”
Freshman middle blocker Jordin Dunaway led the team with nine kills and four aces.
Jasmine Messinger added five kills, seven perfect passes and eight digs, and Kenzi Moses totaled six perfect passes, an ace and 10 digs.
“Josephine Edgington, she had beautiful sets. She was putting the ball everywhere and helping out her hitters,” Wetzler said.
Port Angeles (3-8, 3-9) hosts North Kitsap (11-0, 11-2) for senior night at 6:15 p.m. today.
Neah Bay 3, Crescent 0
NEAH BAY — No. 1-ranked Neah Bay won a North Olympic 1B League matchup 3-0 over a competitive Crescent Loggers volleyball squad, which lost its first league match of the year.
For Crescent, Katelyn Dunavant had five kills, Hayden Horn had eight assists, while Chloe Ferro-May and Naomii Sprague were recognized for their passing.
Neah Bay improved its record to 11-0, 3-0 in league. The Loggers fell to 7-3 and 2-1 in league.
Crescent had a home match today versus Chief Kitsap at 5:45 p.m. Neah Bay will host Forks (6-2, 8-4) at 6:30 p.m. today in a nonleague match.
In other matches Tuesday, Raymond beat Forks 3-0.
