BELLINGHAM — East Jefferson’s Fiona Fraser won the senior girls 2-mile race at the Gear Up Northwest Cross-Country Preview at Sehome High School on Saturday.
Fraser, who was part of last year’s East Jefferson girls’ squad that finished sixth at the state cross-country championships last year, finished with a time of 11 minutes, 56.14 seconds, winning by more than 14 seconds. There were 103 girls competing in the race.
Fraser’s teammate Sylvia Butterfield finished 39th with a time of 14:36.59.
Sequim at Bellarmine Invite
TACOMA — Sequim’s Colby Ellefson finished fifth in the men’s 2-mile varsity run at the 24th annual Bellarmine Cross Country Invitational.
Ellefson had a time of 10:20.4. The winning time was 9:59 and only nine runners out of 124 broke 10:30.
For the girls, Sequim’s Kaitlyn Bloomenrader finished 29th at 13:20.7 and Dawn Hulstedt was 31st at 13:28.1. There were 88 runners in the girls’ race.
Friday’s sports Girls soccer East Jefferson 3, Annie Wright 3
CHIMACUM — The East Jefferson girls soccer team came from behind to earn a tie and point in its season-opener, a 3-3 draw with Nisqually League rival Annie Wright.
Coach Robert Cantley said his players did get tired on a hot day in Chimacum and still have to work on getting into game shape.
“I was quite satisfied overall. A lot of the girls were pretty gassed,” he said.
The game started fast with each team scoring two goals in the first 10 or 11 minutes, Cantley said. The Rivals got their first goal when Kay Botkin forced the action deep in the penalty box. Her pressure finally caused the ball to go in the net off an Annie Wright player for an own goal.
Annie Wright came back and scored on a corner kick and then East Jefferson gave up an own-goal of its own to give the Gators a 2-1 lead.
The Rivals got their second goal when senior Iris Mattern “did her thing and got through their defense and went one-on-one with the goalkeeper,” Cantley said.
After that score, both teams settled down. Botkin nearly had a goal when her shot hit a crossbar. The Gators came back with a long, looping shot in the second half to take a 3-2 lead.
Cantley said the Rivals put a lot of pressure on in the second half, but couldn’t get an equalizer until the final couple of minutes when Ava Shiflett beat some defenders down the wing, then crossed the ball to Botkin, who headed the ball in for the tying goal.
Cantley said it was a tough draw for the Rivals.
“They were very, very physical. They made it hard on us,” Cantley said, saying the Gator defenders were all over the Rivals’ leaders, Shiflett and Iris Mattern, all game.
“They had to fight to get anything,” he said.
Cantley also said some of the younger players did well in their first match, such as freshman Teri Wiley at center back, Fern French at left back and Zinnia Blatchely at defensive mid.
“I put [Blatchely] in the first half and she did so well I kept her in there. That was a nice surprise.”
In goal earning the point were Alkili Clevenger and RJ Spainhour-Oas.
The Rivals (0-0-1) next play at Vashon on Tuesday and then host Bellevue Christian at Port Townsend Memorial Field at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Volleyball Crescent 3, Lake Quinault 0
JOYCE — The Crescent volleyball team went 3-0 against Lake Quinault, winning 25-15, 25-18 and 25-10.
“I was really happy with how the girls all played as a team and they did a great job covering the court. Our setter, Hayden Horn was on fire, getting assist after assist to our middles — Katelyn Dunavant and Ashly Lium,” said coach Kimber Sprague.
