COUPEVILLE — Two days after Sequim pitchers threw a no-hitter, a trio of Chimacum pitchers came close to accomplishing the same feat.
The Cowboys’ Wyatt Pennington, Cole Dotson and Issac Purser pitched a 7-inning one-hitter against Coupeville on Monday as Chimacum won 7-1.
Pennington gave up the lone hit, going three innings, giving up an earned run, striking out one and walking two. Dotson pitched hitless ball in 3 2/3rds innings, striking out seven and walking one. Purser pitched a third of an inning, giving up a walk. Dotson gets credit for the victory.
Despite the pitching heroics, the game was locked up in a 1-1 tie until the fifth inning when Chimacum scored three runs to take control. The Cowboys added three more insurance runs in the sixth.
Henry Brebberman was 2 for 2 on the day with two runs scored, two stolen bases and a walk. Pennington was 1-2 with a triple, a run scored and a walk. Ben Preson had a hit, a run and an RBI, while Arron Serrato had a hit, a run and an RBI. Purser also had a hit, a run and two stolen bases, while Jonah Diehl had a hit and two RBIs.
Chimacum (4-3) opens league play at 4:15 p.m. at home today against Klahowya (3-2).

Boys Soccer Forks 6, Tenino 1
TENINO — It turns out that Spartan basketball’s Seth Johnson is a pretty good sharpshooter at soccer, too.
Johnson had a hat trick as Forks easily beat the Beavers on Monday.
Tenino did not field a team last year. Forks coach Joe Morton said the Spartans were up 6-0 at the half and he subbed in his junior varsity players.
Johnson had not played soccer for Forks High School until this season.
“I didn’t know [Johnson played soccer] until this year. Where have you been all my life, young man?” Morton said.
Also scoring for the Spartans were Hugo Sandoval, Oscar Gonzalez and Marsiel Villacana. Gabe Terrones played goal for the first half and shut out Tenino.
Forks is likely to get a tougher match today at 6 p.m. at home against Montesano. Both the Bulldogs (3-0-0, 4-3-0) and the Spartans (2-0-0, 2-1-0) are undefeated in league, so the winner is in sole control of first place in the Evergreen 1A League.
Girls Golf Sequim 197, Kingston 231
SEQUIM — The Wolves knocked off the Buccaneers in a nine-hole match that served as Sequim’s home opener.
The team’s played the par-36 front nine at Cedars at Dungeness in Monday’s match.
Brittney Gale led the Wolves with a 10-over-par 46, a stroke behind medalist Delaney Olson of Kingston’s 45.
Jessica German added a round of 49, Maddie Uranga shot 50 and Yana Hoesel a 51 for Sequim (1-1).
The Wolves visit Port Angeles today for a match at Peninsula Golf Club.
Girls Tennis Sequim 7, North Mason 0
SEQUIM — The Wolves swept all seven matches for the second straight time and fourth time in six wins on the season at home Monday.
Sequim (6-0) visits five-time defending Olympic League champion North Kitsap (5-0) today with first place on the line.

SEQUIM — Sophomores Kailyn Lopez and Kiana Robideau led the Wolves with two hits apiece at the plate as Sequim scored two runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to beat the Class 3A Thunderbirds.
“Isabelle Dennis had her change-up working to keep her opponents off[-balance], allowing only two hits,” Wolves coach Tim Lusk said.
Freshman reliever LeeAnn Raney allowed two runs in the sixth, but settled down and struck out the next four batters to close out the game.
“Freshman Christy Grubb added a hit [and] put on a defensive clinic at second base for the Wolves,” Lusk said.
Sequim (1-1, 3-2) host Bremerton in a league game Friday.
