PREP ROUNDUP: Area gymnasts shine at subdistrict; PA boys fourth at district swimming

PUYALLUP — Port Angeles, Sequim and Crescent were among nine teams that competed in the 2A/3A subdistrict gymnastics meet this weekend, with several gymnasts moving on to the district meet Wednesday.

Sequim finished fourth as a team while Wolves’ gymnast Alex Schmadeke finished third in the individual all-around.

Schmadeke finished first in the beam with a 9.225, second in the floor exercise with a 9.45, third in the vault with an 8.625 and eighth in the bars with a 7.675. Her all-around score was 34.975.

Other local athletes who placed include Port Angeles’ Jessamyn Schindler, who came in fourth in the vault with an 8.6 and ninth in the beam with an 8.1. Schindler finished 10 in the overall with a 32.25.

These gymnasts did not place in the top 10 but are part of the all-arounds and 12 individuals moving on to district in the following events:

Vault — Danica Pierson, Sequim, 7.15; Ellie Turner, Sequim, 7.1; Aubrie Scott, Crescent, 6.9.

Bars — Pierson, 5.2; Turner, 5.0; Kathryn Jones, Port Angeles, 4.675; Scott, 4.4.

Beam — Pierson, 6.35; Amara Brown, Sequim, 5.65; Turner, 5.55; Scott, 5.35.

Floor — Scott, 7.125; Pierson, 7.05; Turner, 6.55; Brown, 5.95.

All Around — Sharp, 30.85; Mei-Ying Harper-Smith, Port Angeles, 27.45.

Bainbridge won the meet with 162.9 points, while North Thurston was second at 159.625 and North Kitsap third at 148.585. Sequim tallied 137.5 points, just missing out qualifying as a full team.

Boys swimming Port Angeles at district

RENTON — The Port Angeles boys swim team finished fourth at the 1A/2A District Swim Championship held this weekend.

The best finish for the team was a second place by the 200 freestyle relay squad of Adam Weller, Landon Close, Josh Gavin and Alex Che.

The Riders’ 200 individual medley relay team of Blake Nahory (backstroke), Weller (breaststroke), Gavin (butterfly) and Che (freestyle) with the team’s best time of the season at 1 minute, 50.67 seconds.

Che grabbed a sixth place with a personal record 23.92 in the 50 freestyle. Gavin came in sixth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.88 and Nahory finished sixth with a personal best 1:02.99 in the 100 backstroke.

Colby Ellefson, who practiced and competed with the Riders in the regular season but represents Sequim in the postseason, also got a sixth place in the 500 freestyle. Ellefson’s time was a personal best by nine seconds, while he broke the Sequim 500 freestyle record by seven seconds. Ellefson by himself placed 14th out of 18 teams at the district meeting.

All of these athletes qualified for the 1A/2A state swim and dive championships to be held Thursday to Saturday at the King Country Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
