PREP HOOPS: Sequim girls win big at Olympic

BREMERTON — The Sequim girls basketball team got double figures from five players in the Wolves’ highest-scoring game of the year Saturday, an 83-37 win over Olympic.

The victory sets up a battle for Olympic League first place in Sequim on Tuesday against rival Port Angeles.

Despite the 83 points, head coach Joclin Julmist said the team had some struggles offensively.

“We won and played a pretty good game. The girls played very well on the defensive side of the ball but struggled to put the ball into the basket. Jolene [Vaara] and the Hannahs [Bates and Wagner] set the tone and the rest of the team followed,” Julmist said.

Vaara had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jelissa Julmist also had a double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Bates had 15 points, four assists and six steals, while Wagner had 12 points and six rebounds. Taryn Johnson had her best game of the year so far with 14 points and six steals.

Tuesday’s game will be held at 7 p.m. The Wolves go into that game 6-0 in the Olympic 2A League (8-1 overall) while Port Angeles is 5-0 (5-4 overall).

CHEHALIS — The Port Angeles girls basketball team was hurt by turnovers and W.F. West’s Pepperdine-bound 6-foot-2 player Drea Brumfield in a 53-34 road loss Saturday.

Brumfield hit four 3-pointers and had 24 points and the Roughriders had 22 turnovers to W.F. West’s 10. The Riders went into the half close, down just 20-17, but the Bearcats outshot Port Angeles 63 percent to 15 percent in the third quarter to blow the game open.

“Our low shooting percentage for the game was partly the result of the Bearcats’ tough 2-3 zone, the best defense we’ve seen this year, and partly the result of our own tentativeness on shots,” said coach Michael Poindexter.

“On the whole, I was pleased with our man-to-man defense against the Bearcats, who had to work deep into the shot clock for most of their points,” he said.

Eve Burke had her usual good game with 19 points and 14 rebounds, but she didn’t get a lot of scoring help.

“Anna Petty’s defensive effort and skill was also a highlight for us,” Poindexter said. Bailee Larson had six boards and four assists.
