SEQUIM — Sequim received the best performance of the season from No. 4 golfer Cole Smithson on the way to beating North Kitsap 159-183 at home in a nine-hole boys golf match at The Cedars at Dungeness.
Coach Sean O’Mera said Smithson was the team’s player of the day.
“I am so proud of Cole,” O’Mera said. “He has worked so hard on his game this year, yet, to this point, he didn’t have too much to show for it.
“While he would play great in practice, he hadn’t broken out in a match. [Thursday] that changed. Cole made two birdies, and it could have easily been four. Most importantly, though, he didn’t allow himself to get rattled when he made mistakes. He kept his head down, he kept trying, and he battled all day. Just missing a birdie putt on the last hole, Cole shot 40.”
Dominic Riccobene’s 2-over-par 37 earned match medalist honors for Sequim with a birdie and three bogeys on the round.
“Dom did what he does best, drive the ball,” O’Mera said.
Ben Sweet’s 39 and Pryce Glasser’s 43 rounded out the counting scores for Sequim.
Zack Thompson and Lars Wiker each shot rounds of 51 in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots for the Wolves.
Sequim (10-0) hosts Olympic on Monday, part of a busy week that also will see the Wolves travel to Skagit Valley Golf & Country Club for the prestigious Egbers Invitational in Burlington next Friday.
Port Angeles 178, Olympic 192
PORT ANGELES — All four Roughrider rounds were below 47 strokes as Port Angeles took down the Trojans on Thursday at Peninsula Golf Club.
“The rain held off, and we were able to hold them off as well,” coach Bon Anderson said.
Freshman Phoenix Flores had the low round of the day to earn match medalist honors, shooting 4-over-par 40. Edun Bailey added a round of 44, while Austin Worthington and Nate Anderson each recorded rounds of 47.
Port Angeles (8-2) hosts Bainbridge on Tuesday.
Girls Golf Port Angeles 220, Olympic 239
PORT ANGELES — With the prep postseason in sight, Piper Williams earned match medalist honors for the third straight match as the Port Angeles girls golf team improved to 8-2 with a 220-239 triumph over Olympic.
Williams posted a round of 50 Thursday in a nine-hole match at Peninsula Golf Club to lead the Roughriders.
Freshman Claire Osterburg placed second with her low round of the season, a 54.
Katie Marchant and Sydney Fryer each carded rounds of 58 to round out the counting scores for Port Angeles.
Mia Neff (63) and Brenna Furnice (67) also played for the Riders.
Port Angeles hosts its next match against Bainbridge on Tuesday.
