PORT ANGELES — Sequim took home the team title with a combined score of 24-over-par 168, to win the six-team Duke Streeter Invitational.
Host Port Angeles finished tied for fourth with Shelton with a total of 187, Kingston was second at 171 and Klahowya was sixth at 197.
Kingston’s Aimee Zehrung and Emily Vernik partnered to shoot 4-over-par 76 in the two-person best ball scramble played at Peninsula Golf Club.
The Wolves No. 1 tandem of freshman Alex McMenamin and junior Brianna Kettel tied for second with Port Angeles duo Dana Fox and Chloe Brown, with each side shooting 78.
“We had so many [putts for] birdies that were just centimeters from the hole stop on us and a couple that looked like they were going to fall spin out,” Fox said.
“We had fun, though. The Streeter is the event I look forward to the most [on the schedule] because there’s no pressure and you get to see all the players from the other schools.”
Fox and Brown were especially bedeviled by a birdie putt that hung on the lip of the cup and just wouldn’t drop in on the par-3 ninth hole.
McMenamin and Kettel ran into trouble on the par-5 10th hole after a miscommunication on which tee shot to use ended up with both players picking up their shots.
They had to penalize themselves a stroke and be shuttled back to the tee to hit another pair of drives, eventually posting a bogey.
Zehrung and Vernik narrowly avoided trouble and falling into a three-way tie for first on their final hole, with one approach shot landing out of bounds and the second landing just to the left of an out of bounds marker along the right-hand side of the fairway.
Sequim’s No. 2 team of Cecilee Wech and Kailee Price posted a 90, which included a beauty of a pitch by Price on the par-4 16th.
The Roughriders’ No. 2 team of Maddy Boe and Greta Gieseke struggled from the start, recording a 12 on their first hole, on the way to a 109.
“We couldn’t get it back together all day after that [first hole],” Boe said while waiting for the official result announcement.

PA second at Higgins Memorial
BREMERTON — Port Angeles’ second-place finish led North Olympic Peninsula teams at the 12-team Tim Higgins Memorial Invitational at Kitsap Golf and Country Club.
Host Central Kitsap picked up its fifth straight win in the event after shooting a team score of 321, 17 shots better than the Riders’ 338.
Klahowya’s Aaron Holliday won the individual title after shooting a 3-over-par 74 in wet and windy conditions on the tight confines of the Kitsap course.
The Higgins is a stroke-play, count-every-shot gathering of the top four golfers from teams from the Peninsula and the West Sound area.
“I was very impressed with our play on a very demanding, challenging golf course,” Roughriders coach Mark Mitrovich said.
“There were some tournament pins tucked in places that I never saw back when I would play in the Kitsap Amateur,” Mitrovich said, referring to the placement of pins on the greens.
Micah Needham led the Roughriders, overcoming some early season struggles to fire an 80.
“I’m hoping he is doing a bit of a repeat of what he did last year, where he started a little mediocre and then caught fire to qualify for districts and state,” Mitrovich said.
Alex Atwell had an 83, Mason Jackson an 85 and Alex Brown a 90, to round out Port Angeles’ scores.
Keegan Khile’s 90 led Port Townsend to a fifth-place finish at 370.
Jack Bishop and Zack Glover each shot 92 and Patrick Morton a 96 for the Redskins.
Sequim finished sixth with a score of 372.
Sophomore Jack Shea paced the Wolves with an 84, followed by Anthony Pinza at 93, Travis Priest with a 96 and Jesse Francis a round of 99.
Chimacum was ninth at 403, with James Porter shooting a 91, Jack Hilt a 95, Marcus Buford a 102 and Dan Rasmussen a 115.
Recent Peninsula College men’s basketball commitment Ryley Callaghan of South Kitsap shot an 83.
