PREP GOLF: Sequim girls and boys splits with Klahowya

SEQUIM — Freshman Alex McMenamin is quickly becoming a name to watch when it comes to high school girls golf.

McMenamin carded a two-over par 39 on the par-37 front nine at Cedars at Dungness to help lead Sequim (1-0, 1-1) to a 294-334 victory over Klahowya on Wednesday.

Her round came a day after posting a team-leading 42 in the Wolves’ loss to Central Kitsap and was the lowest round for a Sequim girls player since Zoei Zbaraschuk in 2010, according to coach Garrett Smithson.

“The weather was beautiful and the course could not have been in any better shape,” Smithson said.

Kailee Price totaled a 59, Megan O’Mera a 61, Cecille Wech posted a 65 and Kelly Anders had a 70 for the Wolves.

Sequim will host Olympic next Thursday.

Boys Golf

Klahowya 233, Sequim 241

SEQUIM — The Wolves stumbled to start the Olympic League golf season, losing their first match of the season, a nine-hole home contest at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course against Klahowya.

“Although the weather and course conditions were near perfect, several players on both teams struggled,” Sequim coach Bill Shea said.

Trailing by one stroke after four players on each team carded their scores, the Wolves fate was sealed when Klahowya’s fifth man, Andrew Nelson posted a score of 42.

Sequim was led by sophomore Jack Shea’s 42, a 46 from senior Anthony Pinza and a 47 from senior Jesse Francis.

Travis Priest scored 52, Henry Markham notched a round of 54 and Connor Titterness 73, to round out the Wolves afternoon.

Klahowya’s Aaron Holiday earned medalist honors with a low round of 40.

Sequim visits Bremerton for a match at Gold Mountain Golf Course’s Olympic Course next Thursday.
