SEQUIM — Going up against some 3A teams brought into the Olympic League fold this year, the Sequim boys golf team won the Olympic League championship with five boys in the top 15 golfers.
Sequim tallied a team score of 318, 11 strokes ahead of second- place Central Kitsap. Port Angeles finished seventh with a 414 and East Jefferson tied for 10th out of the 12 schools at Tuesday’s meet at Cedars at Dungeness.
On the girls’ side, Bainbridge won with a score of 339. Sequim came in fourth with a 428 and Port Angeles was sixth at 461. East Jefferson was 11th at 538.
Sequim’s Ben Sweet finished tied for first place with a 1-over-par 73. Also shooting 73 were Ben Chapman of Bainbridge, Luc Barnett of South Kitsap and Garr Coombe of Central Kitsap. All three of those golfers are from 3A schools.
Chapman ended up winning the league individual championship with a birdie on hole 12 in a playoff.

“It was a real treat to see the crowd cheering and applauding for the boys’ playoff competition,” said North Kitsap girls coach Anh Tran. “It was a tremendous experience for Ben Chapman, Luc Barnett, Garr Coombe and Ben Sweet. Congrats to Ben Chapman. What a finish.”
Sequim’s Dominic Riccobene tied for eighth with a 79, while teammate Garret Hoesel tied for 10th with an 80. Sequim’s Pryce Glasser tied for 15th with an 86.
There were 48 boys in the championship.
East Jefferson’s Braley Phillips had a good day, tying with Riccobene for eighth place with a 79. Phillips’ teammates Cade Martin finished 32nd with a 103, Lane Liske 37th with a 104 and Wilder Lewis 48th with a 144.
Also shooting an 86 was Port Angeles’ top golfer, Derek Sparks, who finished 15th. The Roughriders’ Edun Bailey finished 29th with a 101, Nate Anderson finished 41st with a 110 and Reid Schmidt 44th with a 117.
The girls’ winner was Suzie Tran of North Kitsap, who shot a 1-under-par 71 and won by nine strokes. The top Olympic Peninsula girl was Hannah Wagner of Sequim, who came in ninth with a 97. Wagner’s teammate Jessica German was tied for 13th with a 103, and Piper Williams was the top Port Angeles girl with a 105, good for 15th.
“This was the first time any of them had ever played a full 18,” said Roughriders’ girls coach Michael DuPuis. “Piper shot her best nine holes ever when she shot 51, which included her first — and the team’s first — birdie.

“I was very proud of them for working so hard in this shortened season and looking forward to having them all back again next year.”
East Jefferson’s Alyssa Vandenberg was 16th with a 106, leading her team. Sequim’s JoNeil Hill cracked the top 20, coming in 19th with a 111.
Other Port Angeles scores included Saylah Commerton, tied for 22nd with a 116, Eve Burke, tied for 28th with a 117, and Lauren Chapman, 34th with a 124.
Sequim’s Delaney Nucci rounded out the Wolves’ scoring, coming in tied for 28th with a 117.
