PREP GOLF: Sequim boys and girls shoot past Port Townsend

SEQUIM — The Sequim boys and girls golf teams defeated Port Townsend in season-opening matches for both schools at Cedars at Dungeness.

Wolves junior Blake Wiker earned medalist honors in the boys match with a 1-over-par 38 on the front nine helping Sequim take down the Redhawks 163-225.

The four best scores are counted for each side.

Wolves senior Josiah Carter was second with a round of 40 and Sequim sophomore Andrew Vanderberg was third with a 41. Liam Payne rounded out the Wolves’ scorers with a 44.

Port Townsend was led by Jacob Madison’s 42. Caleb Johnson carded a 51, Chris Durham a 62 and Braxton Bowman a 70 for the Redhawks.

The Sequim boys host North Mason on Thursday.

Port Townsend has a home match with Kingston on Tuesday.

Girls match

On the girls side, Sequim beat the Redhawks 186-266.

Sarah Shea led the Wolves with a 2-under-par round of 34 on the front nine at Cedars.

“The weather turned out to be great and the course was in amazing shape,” Sequim girls coach Garrett Smithson said of Thursday’s match.

“Western Washington University commit-Sarah Shea, was the medalist with an amazing 34. “

Smithson said the girls played the front nine as a par-36 and Shea totaled three birdies on holes 6, 7 and 9.

“We count the four best scores for the team score (PT only had one girl). The score for PT is 266 because we use the score of 72 for 3 ghost players,” Smithson said.

Samantha Smith added a 45 for Sequim, Yana Hoesel scored a 49 and Maddie Uranga and JoNell Hill each had 58 for the Wolves.

The Redhawks’ lone girls golfer, Mackenzie Lake, shot a 50.

Sequim hosts North Mason on Thursday.

Kingston visits Port Townsend on Tuesday.
