BREMERTON — The Port Angeles boys golf team began its 2022 season with a 198-209 win over Bremerton at Gold Mountain Golf Course.
Edun Bailey led the way with a 42 for the Roughriders, the best score on the day for either team. Phoenix Flores shot a 50, Dalton Ross carded a 51 and Redi Schmidt shot a 55.
Two other Riders shot just seven holes due to darkness. Nate Anderson shot a 42 while Isaac Shamp carded a 48. JV golfers went six holes due to darkness. Brock Tejeda had the best score at 38, while Corey Young shot a 39, Tony McMahan 43 and Jack Harrelson 47.
Sequim 186, Bainbridge 206
BAINBRIDGE — The Sequim boys golf team beat 3A Bainbridge at Wing Point Golf Club this weekend.
“With both teams playing their first match of the season, the scores were higher than all would have liked. However, the Wolves held strong and came out with the win,” said coach Sean O’Mera.
The Sequim boys are the defending Olympic League champion and return most of the players from that team. The Wolves didn’t get a chance to go state last year, but finished second at state in 2019, the last year the tournament was held.
A member of that powerful 2019 team, Ben Sweet, led all golfers with a top score of 39, the Wolves top 3 outplayed Bainbridge by a wide margin. Dominic Riccobene shot 44 and Pryce Glasser carded a 47. Cole Smithson did not have his best day, but he managed to grind out a 56 for the fourth score for the Wolves.
“The conditions on the island were beautiful. Mostly clear skies and sun for the first hour, then darkness began to creep in. Lars Wiker and Zackary Thompson had to play the last hole in near darkness, but still, they got it in,” O’Mera said.
“I am really proud of all the guys. They had fantastic attitudes for the most part, and they had fun the whole day. Special shout-out goes to Lars and Zack for playing their first varsity golf matches.”

Port Angeles 236, Bremerton 246
BREMERTON — The Port Angeles girls golf team, shorthanded due to the Roughriders’ extended basketball season, beat Bremerton by 10 strokes in the Riders first match of the year this weekend at Gold Mountain Golf Course.
The Riders’ Sydney Fryer, playing in her first varsity match, tied for first with Katie Marchant and Saylah Commerton, all with 58. Lauryn Chapman shot a 62, while Brenna Furnice and Mia Neff each carded 63.
