PREP GOLF: Port Angeles ends up ninth at state

CHEHALIS — North Olympic Peninsula golfers had up-and-down days competing on the second and final day of their respective Class 2A boys and girls state golf championships.

Playing at Chehalis’ par-72 Riverside Golf Club, Port Angeles’ Cale Wentz bettered his day one round of 83 with a second-day 78 to finish tied for 21st-place overall with 161 strokes, the top finish of area competitors.

Senior teammate Austin Worthington shot rounds of 81 and 85 to finish tied for 33rd as the Port Angeles boys finished ninth overall as a team.

Sequim’s Adrian Aragon posted rounds of 82 and 88 to end up tied for 36th (170).

Burlington-Edison’s Wyatt Brownell won the state championship by six strokes after shooting a 2-under-par 70 Wednesday to finish at 142 strokes. Brownell trailed Washougal’s Mason Acker by one stroke entering the final round.

Pullman won the team title with 106 points, while Olympic League champion Bainbridge was third with 92.5.

Port Angeles’ Claire Osterberg ended up tied for 38th after shooting rounds of 95 and 109 at nearby Tumwater Valley Golf Course in Tumwater.

Jana Knapp of Mark Morris won the state championship by three strokes after shooting rounds of 72 and 79. The Monarchs also won the team championship with 80.5 points, ahead of Olympic League foe Bainbridge (68.5).
