PREP GOLF: PA’s Worthington, Wentz win Duke Streeter Invite

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles tandem of Austin Worthington and Cale Wentz held off a talented Bainbridge squad to win the Duke Streeter Invitational two-man scramble held at the Peninsula Golf Club.

Worthington and Wentz combined for a 7-under-par 65, edging the Bainbridge team of Andrew Jobes and Anderson Wicklund, who shot a six-under 66, and Tom McFadden and Samuel Patterson, who shot a five-under 67.

“I could not be more proud of these gents,” said coach Bob Anderson. “This duo has put in the work and focus needed to overcome the adversity of golf and past letdowns. This is a great way for Austin to close out his senior year at his home course, and for both to carry on this momentum and focus deep into their postseason events.”

A total of seven high schools and 45 golfers competed in the event.

The Port Angeles duo of Sky Gelder and Kolby Charles shot a 3-over-par 75, good for sixth.

Sequim’s team of Cody Dunscomb and Levi Breithaupt was eighth with an 8-over-par 80, while Florentino Martinez and Joey Kang of Sequim was 11th with an 18-over 90.

Girls results

Bainbridge won the girls Duke Streeter, with the pair of Sara Kreigh and Grace Charintranont winning by 11 shots with a round of 67.

Sequim Sara German and Chloe Tweeter were fifth with an 83, while Port Angeles’ Mia Neff/Claire Osterberg and Malena Marquez/Cadence Allaway were sixth with an 85. Sequim’s Kendra Dodson and Raimey Brewer were also tied for sixth with an 85.

Some of the Port Angeles and Sequim boys and girls golfers still looking to qualify for the state tournament will play at the district/state qualifier tournament Tuesday at Allenmore Golf Course in Tacoma.
