BREMERTON — Port Angeles sophomore Phoenix Flores shot a round of 7-over-par 78 to claim the Olympic League Boys Golf Championship on Monday at Kitsap Golf & Country Club.
“Our very own Phoenix Flores took first place,” coach Bob Anderson said. “Phoenix and Edun Bailey move straight on to the state tourney in Spokane.”
Flores posted two back-nine birdies in his league-winning 18 holes.
Bailey tied for sixth with an 11-over-par 82 with a birdie on each nine.
The top seven golfers and ties advanced to state, while the next eight will get another shot.
Three Roughriders are still in the mix to qualify for the state tournament, set for May 23-24 in Spokane.
Austin Worthington (85), Cale Wentz (87) and Nate Anderson (88) didn’t make the state cut Monday but can still punch a ticket at the West Central/Sea-King District Tournament at The Cedars at Dungeness on Tuesday.
The same applies for Sequim golfers Zack Thompson (86), Carter Cronin (89) and Cole Smithson (90).
Port Angeles’ Reid Schmidt (99) and Sequim’s Lars Wiker (99), Cody Dunscomb (104) and Kyle Sharpe (112) also competed at the league tourney.
Williams tops in 2A
BREMERTON — Led by top Class 2A golfer Piper Williams, the Port Angeles girls golf team earned three of the top six spots at the Olympic League Girls Golf Championship at Kitsap Golf & Country Club.
Williams, the Olympic League’s regular season scoring champ, earned a trip back to the state championships in Spokane by shooting a 22-over-par 93. That was the top 2A girls score. She finished second overall with Bainbridge’s Elise Walters winning with an 81. However, Bainbridge is a 3A school and that school’s golfers move on to 3A district and state.
Claire Osterberg was second for the Riders with a 99, while Lauryn Chapman’s 104 was good for fourth amongst 2A linksters.
Sequim’s Jelissa Julmist was fifth with 105.
The top six players advanced to the state tourney at Meadowwood in Liberty Lake.
Other players will still have a shot to reach state at the district meet at The Cedars at Dungeness on Tuesday.
Sequim’s Emily Post (110), Ava Johnson (112) and Isabella Williams (113) all earned that extra chance along with Port Angeles’ Mia Neff (113).
