BREMERTON — The Sequim soccer team got another huge game from Taryn Johnson and great defense as the Wolves crushed Olympic on the road Tuesday 7-1.
Johnson scored six goals in the victory. That coming after a five-goal game on Sept. 12 against North Mason.
“We wanted to establish possession early and we wanted to score early. We accomplished all of those things. We defended really well and were dangerous in transition,” said coach Ken Garling.
With the win, the Wolves moved to 3-0-0 (9 points) on the season with a huge matchup at 6:45 p.m. today against 3-0-0 (9 points) league foe North Kitsap.
The Wolves’ other goal came from Nikoline Updike, who hit a one-timer from 25 yards out and into the net.
Raimey Brewer and Eve Breithaupt each had a pair of assists, while Jennyfer Gomez and Olive Bridge each had an assist. Kalli Grove picked up the victory in goal.
Garling said in addition to being a “scoring machine” for the Wolves with 11 goals in two games, Johnson provides a lot of leadership to the team.
“She encourages the other girls. She leads by example. She gets everyone involved. The girls want to be on the pitch with her, they want to play with her,” said Garling.
Garling said Gomez had a strong game controlling the midfield opening up the field for Johnson’s goal-scoring. He also said Libby Turella, Ivy Barrett and Kaia Lestage played well in the back on defense.
Port Angeles 3, North Mason 0
BELFAIR — A young Port Angeles soccer team got a big game from Kedryn DeScala and a rare banana kick goal from Teanna Clark in a 3-0 win over North Mason.
Clark got the Roughriders off to a good start in the 10th minute when she hooked in a corner kick through the North Mason goalkeeper’s hands for a goal.
“She’s been working hard on that,” said coach Daniel Horton.
Horton said that while a shutout win is good for the young Roughriders, he was also happy that he got all 16 players into the match. The Riders this year are fielding a team with 12 sophomores and freshmen, and he was glad to be able to get a look at all of them.
“Our goal this year is to get better. We’re looking at getting better every outing. I think we did that [against North Mason],” he said.
DeScala scored a pair of goals. She got her first in the 28th minute with an assist to Paige Mason and her second in the 51st minute, picking up a deflection after a shot by Becca Manson.
Kennedy Rognlien earned the shutout in goal. Horton said the Riders’ defense played great, allowing just one shot on goal but that Rognlien played a great game controlling the team’s defense and positioning players.
Port Angeles (2-2-0, 6 points) hosts Olympic (0-3-0, 0 points) at 6:45 p.m. today.
East Jefferson 3, Cascade Christian 2
PUYALLUP — The East Jefferson soccer team overcame illness within the team and got a late goal from Ava Shiflett to beat Cascade Christian 3-2 on the road Tuesday.
The team had a number of starters out sick, said coach Rob Cantley. “We had a few girls out sick. In fact, I have a couple more who aren’t practicing today because they’re not feeling well.”
With some of the regulars out, Cantley said some young freshmen were forced to step in and play. He said Clara Camp and Halsey Emery were a couple of those freshmen who had a good game.
“Their eyes went wide when I told them they would be starting. I told them to ‘just relax and you’ll do fine. You’ll make some mistakes, but don’t worry about it’,” Cantley said.
Shiflett finished with two goals and Iris Mattern had an assist on a corner kick. Mattern also had a shot that went off the Cascade Christian goalkeeper and bounced to Shiflett for her game-winner. It wasn’t officially an assist, but Cantley said she definitely helped set up the goal.
Shiflett also helped set up another goal, beating defenders on a run and drawing Cascade Christian’s keeper out of the goal, then getting the ball to Kay Botkin, who kicked it in to an open net for a goal.
East Jefferson (1-2-1, 1-2-1, 4 points) has a game at 5:30 p.m. today against Klahowya (2-0-0, 5-0-0, 6 points) at Port Townsend Memorial Stadium.
