BAINBRIDGE — The Port Angeles girls soccer team didn’t come away with a win against a strong 3A team, but coach Daniel Horton saw a lot of things in his team to like in the season opener.
The Roughriders lost to Bainbridge 5-0 on Tuesday night in Bainbridge. Horton said three of those goals came very late in the game as the Riders were able to keep it close through most of match.
Bainbridge was 14-1 and won the Olympic League last year.
“Obviously, a win would feel good to start your season. But if you’re not going to get a win, that was a good way to start the season,” said Horton. “In the long run, it will help us.”
Horton said the game showed him what the Roughriders, a young team, need to work on. He was also glad how the team played through most of the second half. After Bainbridge got up 2-0, the team made adjustments at the half and played better soccer.
One player he felt stood out for the Riders was Kennedy Rognlien. Rognlien was a defender last year, but moved to goalkeeper this year.
“They really gave her a workout. They got off a bunch of shots from all over the field and she made a lot of big-time saves,” Horton said. “She made saves that I know a lot of keepers in our league wouldn’t make.”
A game today against Forks was canceled. The next game for Port Angeles (0-1) is 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at Wally Sigmar Field against Kingston (0-0).
