SPANAWAY — Early morning wake ups are planned today for the Olympic League’s two top girls golfers, Port Angeles senior Dana Fox and Sequim freshman Alex McMenamin.
Each will compete in the Class 2A state golf tournament at the par-72 The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway, home course of PGA Tour pro Ryan Moore.
Another trip for Fox
Tee times are set at 7:08 a.m. for Fox with McMenamin following at 7:32 a.m.
Fox will be making her fourth straight state appearance and is looking to place for the third straight year.
She finished tied for 14th place in 2013 after identical rounds of 95 at The Classic, and was tied for 34th at Lake Spanaway in 2012.
Fox missed the cut as a freshman.
“She is focused on a top-10 finish,” Riders coach Jacob Lippold said.
“Dana has improved six shots on her nine-hole average this year [to 41.4] and the keys to that improvement will remain the same at state: staying relaxed and confident.”
Studying The Classic
McMenamin led the Olympic League with a scoring average of 41 per nine holes this season and has put in some recent practice time at The Classic.
“Alex has played there three times in the last four days so it won’t be a matter of not knowing the course but just hitting the right shots and having the bounces go her way,” said Sequim coach Garrett Smithson.
“We are aiming for a top-10 finish and she’s completely capable of that.”
While new to state, McMenamin has tournament experience.
She went 3-0 in match play to win her flight at the Pacific Northwest Girls Junior Amateur in Idaho last August.
“I think once she gets past the first couple of holes she’ll be ready to rock,” Smithson said.
McMenamin is fully recovered from a back injury that kept her out for a week in April
“We played nine holes together last week and she’s back to being herself and her golf swing looks good,” Smithson said.
“She’s ready to go.”
