CLALLAM BAY — Quilcene’s defensive press forced early Clallam Bay turnovers, helping the Rangers build a 16-2 first quarter lead and ultimately a 38-29 win.
“[The] game was physical from the start,” Quilcene coach Briana Weller said.
“That is the nature of the beast with the [North] Olympic League teams . . . rough and tough play.
“Our press created quite a few turnovers and the girls were able to convert and jumped out to an early lead.”
Clallam Bay coach Kathleen Winter was encouraged by her team’s play later on in the game.
“We started off really sluggish and couldn’t figure out a way to score in the first half,” Winter said.
“But I was really pleased with our play in the second half, especially our defense.”
Quilcene’s Megan Weller and Katie Love led all scorers with 12 points apiece.
“Sammy Rae continued her dominating rebounding presence in the paint and scored eight points,” Weller said.
Mariah LaChester, Jeddie Herndon and Atokena Abe all scored seven to lead the Bruins.
“Atokena Abe only played two quarters for us but had seven rebounds and four steals,” Winter said.
“She’s only a freshman and very new to the game but she has a lot of natural ability.”
The Rangers (1-0, 6-2) played at Cedar Park Christian on Tuesday and will host Crescent on Monday.

SILVERDALE — The Roughriders picked up a nonleague victory Monday.
Port Angeles started strong, shutting out the Eagles with a 12-0 first quarter, but a tough shooting game helped Klahowya close the gap.
Port Angeles shot just 26.7 percent from the floor, making 15 of 56 field-goal attempts, while hitting 7 of 17 from the free-throw line.
“We got 24 offensive rebounds but could not convert those into many points,” Riders coach Michael Poindexter said.
“We missed 14 fairly easy, uncontested shots inside; making even half of those would have made the winning margin much more comfortable.”
Nizhoni Wheeler led Port Angeles in scoring with 10 points. She also had six rebounds.
Emily Johnson had a well-rounded stat line, tying for the team lead in rebounds with eight, and swiping seven steals with five points.
Hayley Baxley added nine points and eight rebounds for the Riders.
Port Angeles (0-2, 3-5) visits Black Hills for a nonleague contest on Tuesday.
“We continue to have troubles passing against zone defenses, and some much-needed practice time over the break should help with that,” Poindexter said.
