PORT ANGELES — The pregame layup line continued into the opening four minutes of the contest for the Port Angeles girls basketball team in a 74-42 win over Kingston on Friday.
Roughrider defenders forced Buccaneer turnovers on the first 10 possessions of the game and Port Angeles converted on 10 of its first 11 shots in building a 24-0 lead.
Kingston was unable to get off a shot until 3:17 of the game had expired and scored its first points nearly five minutes into the first quarter.
“It was a nice first four minutes,” coach Michael Poindexter said.
“Our press troubled them, clearly. Both of our presses, because we went into another zone after the timeout and it was effective.”
Millie Long scored 14 of her game-high 23 points in the opening quarter. She also had five assists in the contest.
“Great work on top of our 1-3-1 as always, and good choices and execution on drives inside,” Poindexter said of her performance.
Eve Burke totaled eight of her 21 points early on and led the Riders with eight rebounds. Both Long and Burke shot 64 percent from the field for the game.
“Eve had a great game against [Ellee] Brockman,” Poindexter said of Kingston’s 6-foot post. “You are going to give up some against her in man-to-man.”
“We sort of decided that there is a certain amount we aren’t going to get out of that and neither are they,” Poindexter said. “It’s not good for each team to keep doing that. We have other things that we need to work on and you saw we were not very effective in the 2-3 zone for the last four minutes [of the first quarter].”
The Buccaneers did respond, playing more like the good-shooting team that pushed Sequim to the brink in a 66-62 loss earlier this month.
Port Angeles focused on improved effort in its 2-3 zone and man-to-man defenses for the remainder of the contest and fared well, despite losing Jaida Wood and Myra Walker to injuries during the game.
“It’s odd to talk about adversity in a game like that but we had some,” Poindexter said. “We allowed 10 points in four minutes, that’s a 20-point quarter. We’ve got to get better and we have to be good all the time.”
Poindexter pointed to Bailee Larson as his player of the game. She scored 13 points and had team highs in steals with seven and assists with five along with Long.
“Bailee Larson played a phenomenal game everywhere,” Poindexter said. “Distributing the ball, hands everywhere.”

Sequim 84, Bremerton 35
SEQUIM — The Wolves’ Melissa Porter scored 28 points to help lead Sequim to an 84-35 win over Bremerton on Thursday.
It was the Wolves’ (7-1) sixth win in a row. Porter did almost all of her damage from the floor, hitting 13 field goals. She also had six rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Kalli Wiker had 17 points and made three 3-pointers to go along with six assists, while Jayla Julmist had another double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds to go along with five assists and six steals.
“It was a great senior night. Senior Tarrah Stipe played tough ‘D’ and Amanda Weller added four assists along with her five points,” said coach Linsay Rapelje.
Sequim plays at Central Kitsap (7-4) on Wednesday.

NEAH BAY — Neah Bay’s Laila Greene sank seven 3-pointers and scored 30 points to lead the Red Devils to a 76-18 win over Chief Kitsap on Friday.
Ruth Moss also had 14 points and Oceana Aguirre 11.
Greene shot 7-for-8 from beyond the arc and 11-for-14 from the floor overall.
Neah Bay (7-0) next plays at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday at home against Clallam Bay.
