TACOMA — The Lummi Blackhawks seized the moment and upset two-time defending Class 1B champion Neah Bay 26-20 in the state football semifinals Friday at the Tacoma Dome.
The loss snapped a 35-game winning streak for Neah Bay (10-1) that dated back to a 2012 state championship game loss to Liberty Christian.
The Blackhawks used the Red Devils speed and aggressiveness as a weapon, drawing would-be Neah Bay tacklers in and throwing back against the flow of play for two first-quarter touchdowns.
Lummi running back Hank Hoskins took a snap and rushed right, drawing the Red Devils in for a tackle. But Hoskins had other plans; he lofted a pass to Free Borsey for a 36-yard TD.
Later in the first quarter, Trazil Lane took a pitch to his right, stepped back and found Borsey all alone for a 29-yard score.
Lane made it 18-0 when he hauled in a 33-yard pass from Jonathan Casimir.
An inability to sustain drives and turnovers hurt Neah Bay for much of the game.
The Red Devils snapped the shutout on the first play of the fourth quarter. Quarterback Rwehabura Munyagi Jr. connected with Kenrick Doherty Jr. on a 39-yard TD to trim Lummi’s lead to 18-6.
Neah Bay recovered a fumble at the Blackhawks’ 40-yard line, but a Red Devils fumble on handoff to Cole Svec gave the ball right back.
Lummi took advantage. Lane took a Casimir shovel pass and zoomed 57 yards for a 26-6 lead.
The Red Devils answered back as Munyagi found a streaking Cameron Buzzell for a 60-yard TD.
Svec suffered a neck stinger on the two-point conversion and left the game. He finished with 20 carries for 89 yards.
Neah Bay cut the lead to four when Munyagi capped a 22-play, 95-yard drive with a short TD run with 1:48 to play.
But Lummi recovered the ensuing onside kick and was able to run out the clock.
