PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Sequim falls to Franklin Pierce

SEQUIM — The Sequim Wolves struggled to contain Franklin Pierce’s running game, giving up 319 yards on the ground in a 36-14 loss at home.

Franklin Pierce, which went to the district playoffs last year, finished with 403 total yards.

Sequim’s Zeke Schmadeke had a big game, with a 74-yard pass to Malachi Hampton for a touchdown and a 35-yard touchdown run.

Schmadeke finished with 92 yards on 4-for-6 passing and 18 rushes for 66 yards. He also led the team with six tackles.

Malachi Hampton had all four receptions for the Wolves.

Liam Wiker had 14 rushes for 64 yards.

The Wolves (1-1) next play at Elma at 7 p.m. Friday.

Quilcene 41, Concrete 6

CONCRETE — The Quilcene Rangers improved to 2-0 on the season, scoring 34 points in the first half en route to a 41-6 pasting of Concrete on the road Saturday.

Quilcene got touchdown runs of 45 and 10 from quarterback Andrew Perez, who also threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Mason Iverson. Robert Evans touchdown runs of 32 and two yards, while Tyler Beukes had a 1-yard touchdown run.

Quilcene had good balance on offense with 213 yards rushing and 117 yards passing, getting a measure of revenge on the Lions, who beat the Rangers last season.

Coach Trey Beathard said Concrete did have a couple of its main players out with injuries, but that the Rangers played well, especially on defense.

“It’s hard to stop people in eight-man football,” he said. “In two games, our starting defense has not been scored on. It feels good, though and helps with our confidence.”

Last week, Quilcene got up 38-0 on Lummi before the reserves allowed the Blackhawks some late points.

Beathard said the offense did make a few mistakes. “There’s some things we need to clear up, this team will improve.”

Perez led the team with 73 yards rushing on seven carries, while Evans had 65 yards on seven carries. Iverson added 49 yards on five carries.

Perez passed 4-for-5 for 101 yards with Iverson catching two passes for 57 yards. Beukes had two catches for 17 yards.

Defensively, Beukes led the team with nine tackles, while Evans had eight tackles.

The Rangers (2-0) have a very tough game coming up next week, on the road against powerhouse Neah Bay (1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Red Devils will be looking to get back on the winning track after being beaten 60-16 by Liberty Christian on Saturday.

Tulalip Heritage 34, Crescent 4

JOYCE — The Crescent Loggers, despite struggling on offense, were actually ahead 4-0 late in the second quarter and went in to the half down just 6-4.

Coach Brian Shimko said it was a ragged first game for the Loggers, who got on the field for the first time after winning their game last week due to a forfeit by Charles Wright.

The Loggers got a pair of safeties from Michael Love. However, Shimko said in both cases, the Loggers had chances to score touchdowns and could have been up 16-0 instead.

Crescent scored both safeties on bad snaps by Tulalip Heritage. Instead of falling on the loose ball in the end zone, Crescent players kept trying to pick it up.

“Just fall on the ball. You have nowhere to go,” Shimko said.

Tulalip finally broke through for a score with a 37-yard quarterback run in the final 1:34 of the first half.

In the second half, the defense finally got tired, Shimko said.

“In the second half, we had no gas left in the tank,” he said.

On offense, the Loggers made it into the red zone six times, but couldn’t score.

“We could move the ball. Tulalip just made some amazing defensive stops. We could not score,” Shimko said.

He also said the offense hurt itself with seven lost fumbles.

“We had a lot of new kids in different spots. Our offense has a lot of work to do,” he said.

Henry Bourm led the team in rushing with 18 carries for 59 yards. Josh Berson had 47 yards on 10 carries. Dominiq Sprague was a workhorse, but struggled for yards, gaining 25 yards on 25 carries.

Owen Jackson also had two catches for 43 yards.

Crescent (1-1) travels next week to Concrete for a 7 p.m. Friday game The Lions (0-2) lost this week to Quilcene 41-6.
