BELLINGHAM — In a matchup of highly-ranked Class 1B schools, No. 4 Quilcene came up just short against No. 3 Lummi in torrential rain and Whatcom County winds Friday night.
“I’ve been in Texas where it was raining that hard or harder for games, but it was very windy up there,” coach Trey Beathard said. “It reminded me of the Jim Croce song, ‘Don’t spit into the wind.’
“It changed a few things for us, we punted once and in normal weather we would have punted several more times and we had a ton of turnovers.”
Quilcene was able to go to the air despite the conditions, scoring two passing touchdowns on connections between quarterback Nathan Kieffer and Deakon Budnek.
“Lummi was sending every single person every time on the blitz, so we did some play-action passes and Deakon was running wide open and took it in from 50 or 60 yards out,” Beathard said.
“The second score came on a 40-yard pass pattern to Deakon again and Ashton Johnston made a really key block that made it so that Deakon only had to run over one kid near the goal line. Deakon is the fastest kid we have right now and is 220 pounds, so he’s a bit of a load to bring down.”
Kevin Alejo also had a good night on the ground, amassing more than 100 yards for the second straight game and scoring a TD.
“Kevin Alejo broke a long run and got good blocking and he broke some tackles and spun off and I think it was probably a 60-something yard touchdown,” Beathard said.
Up 22-20 at halftime, Quilcene couldn’t find the scoreboard in the second half. Beathard shouldered the responsibility.
“I didn’t do a good enough job of calling the game in the second half,” Beathard said.
Quilcene (1-1) is set to host Concrete at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Forks 32, Ilwaco 12
ILWACO — Quarterback Logan Olson ran for two scores and threw for another to Dalton Kilmer as the Spartans made quick work of the Fishermen on Friday.
Fullback Nate Dahlgren also ran for a score as Forks led 32-0 at halftime.
“A long trip in some rough weather,” coach Trevor Higfield said. “I told the kids that we are like a Double-A baseball team riding between cities.”
Forks (2-0) hosts Pe Ell-Willapa Valley on Friday.
East Jefferson-Coupeville canceled
PORT TOWNSEND — Coupeville officials called off the contest after a number of Port Townsend-Coupeville ferry sailings were canceled amid a high wind advisory Friday night.
The school was concerned about being able to return to Whidbey Island during the wind and rain storm.
The game will not be made up.
East Jefferson will visit Klahowya on Friday.
