PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Sequim holds off feisty Port Townsend … and other scores

Cowan throws four TDs in Wolves win

PORT TOWNSEND – Sequim’s passing attack showed promise and the Wolves made the defensive stop they needed to hold on to a narrow 27-26 victory against Port Townsend at Memorial Field on Friday night.

Sequim’s sophomore quarterback Riley Cowan completed 23 of 30 passes for 275 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions on the night.

He completed 15 of his first 16 passes, including three TDs as the Wolves went up 20-8 early in the second quarter.

The Redhawks rallied in the second half, keyed by the performance of quarterback Berkley Hill.

Hill completed 13 of 23 passes for 129 yards, two TDs and an interception. He also ran 13 times for 82 yards.

Detrius Kelsall caught a TD pass and ran in two more scores for Port Townsend.

The Redhawks had a chance to tie the game after Kelsall’s 1-yard TD with 6:21 to play, but the snap on the extra-point attempt was high.

Sequim’s defense later picked up a fourth-down stop with less than 4 minutes to play and the Wolves’ offense ran out the remainder of the clock.

Sequim (1-0) hosts traditional 1A power Montesano on Friday at 7 p.m.

Port Townsend (0-1) hosts Port Angeles (0-1) on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Memorial Field. The Roughriders lost 40-0 to Mount Tahoma at Civic Field to open their season.
