FORKS — The Spartans won a defensive slugfest without scoring a touchdown, getting a 21-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter from Ethan Bello to pull out an 8-7 win over Granite Falls.
The Spartans got two field goals from Bello and scored on a safety early in the fourth quarter for all of their points in Saturday’s contest.
Bello also kicked a 27-yarder in the first half.
The lone touchdown in the game was by Granite Falls’ Mason McBride on a 47-yard catch and run in the first half.
In addition to the safety and allowing just one touchdown, the Spartans also blocked a punt.
It was the second outstanding defensive effort by the Spartans this season as they also held the Port Angeles Roughriders scoreless to open the season.
Granite Falls had scored 42 points in the Tigers’ previous game last week against Klahowya.
The Spartans’ only loss this season has been against a very good 2A Sequim team.
Forks (0-0, 3-1) begins league play next week with a very tough home game at 7 p.m. Friday against powerhouse Montesano (0-0, 4-0), which has scored 238 points in four wins.
Charles Wright 46, Port Townsend 6
UNIVERSITY PLACE — The Port Townsend Redhawks ran into a buzzsaw in the form of a very good Charles Wright team, falling 46-6 on the road.
“They were a very explosive team. Not big really, but athletic and disciplined,” said Redhawks’ coach Patrick Gaffney.
Port Townsend was also without starting quarterback Noa Montoya, who was out with an ankle injury. Tanner Woodley, a sophomore, filled in and did a solid job, going 9-for-17 for 97 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Dylan Tracer led the Redhawks with 70 yards rushing on 12 carries. He also had 29 yards receiving on five catches for 99 yards from scrimmage. Logan Massie, a sophomore, had 39 yards on 10 carries. He also had two catches for 53 yards, giving him 92 total yards from scrimmage. One of Massie’s catches was for a touchdown.
Jerome Reaux Jr. also had 35 yards rushing on eight carries and a 15-yard pass reception.
Tracer led Port Townsend on defense with nine tackles.
Gaffney also gave credit to Wes Blue, who played a solid game despite battling the flu.
“Our center [Evan Tonar] also played his best game of the year,” Gaffney said.
The Redhawks (0-1, 1-2) next play at Vashon (0-1, 0-4) at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Six-Man Football Clallam Bay 80, Quilcene JV 64
CLALLAM BAY — Clallam Bay’s Ryan Strid, one of the fastest kids in the entire state at the 1B level, had a game he’ll remember for the rest of his life, rushing for 503 yards and scoring a total of 10 touchdowns in a wild 80-64 Bruins’ win over the Quilcene JV.
Strid rushed for eight touchdowns in Saturday’s 6-man clash, scored on a 35-yard interception and scored on a 35-yard reception as the Bruins moved to 2-0 on the season.
“It was amazing,” said Bruins’ coach Aaron Burdette.
Burdette said Anthony McGraw also rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown, while Colin Aldana passed for 105 yards.
“It was a very difficult game, but we stayed togehter. The kids were exhausted and beat up. They’re tough, it was one of the craziest football games I’ve ever seen,” Burdette said.
Burdette said the uilcene JV was a very solid team. “We just could pull away from them.”
The Quilcene JV brought 12 of the program’s 24 players out to Clallam Bay to play the 6-man game.
Quilcene JV coach Trey Beathard said one of the highlights of the game was a two-point conversion scored by Harmony Scholz. He said that might be the first girl to ever score for a Quilcene football team.
Beathard said Jakob Miller had a good game for Quilcene. He returned a kickoff for a touchdown and was the team’s leading tackler on defense. Baron Williams also caught three touchdown passes for the Rangers, while Shannon Kutler had a good game at defensive back and scored a touchdown.
Beathard said Ashton Smead also had a 60-to 70-yard interception return for a touchdown and that Jeremy Allen, just an eighth-grader, had some big tackles on defense.
To be able to go 2-0 when the Bruins struggle to keep the program together each year is huge for the program, said Burdette.
“This is a huge step for Clallam Bay football. To battle with a team like that is huge,” he said.
Clallam Bay will travel to Lake Quinault on Saturday.
The Quilcene varsity will play at Rainier Christian for a rare Friday game in the Rangers’ SeaTac 1B League opener.
