SILVERDALE — East Jefferson needed to play a clean game in order to win its first game of the season against rival Klahowya. That didn’t come to pass as the Rivals made some costly giveaways in a 49-20 loss Friday night.
Three first-half turnovers later, the Rivals trailed 21-0 as the Eagles capitalized on a fumble recovery deep on the East Jefferson side of the field and an interception with the Rivals driving deep in Klahowya territory to open the second quarter.
The Eagles opened the second-half with a 50-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage for a 28-0 lead.
East Jefferson’s Aaron Glanz was 12-for-22 passing for 198 yards with a 28-yard TD pass to Jameson Henery and a pair of interceptions
Cash Holmes hauled in six catches for 90 yards, while Gary Zambor tallied five catches for 80 yards for East Jefferson.
The Rivals (0-4, 0-7) host Bellevue Christian (1-2, 1-6) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Neah Bay 60, Lummi 0
NEAH BAY — Neah Bay’s Jodell Wimberley scored in three different ways and had a 95-yard run to set up another touchdown in a 60-0 romp over Lummi for the Red Devils’ fifth-straight win.
Wimberley started the game with a 70-yard kick return, scored on an 85-yard run from scrimmage and had a 50-yard punt return.
“The only thing he didn’t get was a pick-six,” said coach TJ Greene.
Mathias Greene had three touchdown passes, a 50-yarder to Adan Ellis, a 30-yarder to Makyah Chambers and a 1-yarder to Azriel Swan Jimmicum, normally an offensive lineman on a tackle-eligible play.
Cayden Smith had a 9-yard touchdown run and defensive lineman Seactis Woodruff had a 38-yard fumble recovery for a score.
“We had linemen living the lineman’s dream,” Greene said of Jimmicum and Woodruff’s touchdowns. Tyler Swan scored three PATs.
Greene said the team struggled with some injuries early in the season, including to the explosive Wimberley, who missed a couple of games.
“We’re staying healthy, that’s a big thing. And I think we’re getting that chemistry with a new coaching staff,” he said.
Neah Bay (5-0, 5-2) has climbed up to No. 10 in the Ratings Percentage Index. Greene said the Red Devils will likely get to host at least one playoff game Nov. 4 but will probably have to travel east for a state playoff opener.
Next week, the Red Devils play at Quilcene (2-2, 2-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
North Kitsap 45, Sequim 11
SEQUIM — The No. 4-ranked North Kitsap Vikings put almost constant pressure on Sequim quarterback Lars Wiker in a 45-11 win.
Despite the Vikings’ pressure, Wiker did throw for 160 yards, but officially, the Wolves had -37 yards rushing, which includes quarterback sacks.
Charlie Grider had a great game for Sequim with a 44-yard touchdown catch on a ball he literally ripped out of a North Kitsap defender’s arms. He also caught a pass for a two-point conversion.
Zeke Schmadeke added a 37-yard catch and a great 16-yard catch in triple coverage that helped set up a 25-yard Jack Henninger field goal. He also had a pair of long kick returns.
Sequim (2-4, 2-5) completes its regular season at Bremerton (4-2, 6-2) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
