JOYCE — The Crescent Loggers football team won its second game of the year Saturday, beating Concrete 30-12, but coach Brian Shimko wasn’t pleased with a sluggish start.
The Loggers entered the fourth quarter up just 8-6. They scored 22 points in the fourth to pull away.
“We played harder against Quilcene and Neah Bay,” Shimko said. “We played down their [Concrete’s] caliber.”
Shimko said the Loggers allowed the Lions too many yards and too many big plays and couldn’t convert on third and fourth downs.
Concrete scored on a 60-yard interception return early in the first quarter to put Crescent in a 6-0 hole. The Loggers were able to respond with a drive ending in a 3-yard pass from Henry Bourm to Carter Clifford. A Bourm to Lukas Love point-after made it 8-6, a score that held until the fourth quarter.
“I felt we just couldn’t get rolling,” Shimko said.
In the fourth, Crescent got a 12-yard pass from Bourm to Clifford, but then the defense allowed a 76-yard pass from Concrete as the Lions made it 16-12. Shimko said it was a miscommunication and a misplay by the Loggers.
Crescent was able to drive and got an 8-yard touchdown run from Conner Ferro-May, followed by a 9-yard touchdown run from Conner Bauers to put the game away.
Ferro-May and Bauers each ended up with more than 100 yards. Ferro-May had 16 carries for 104 yards, while Bauers carried 10 times for 113 yards. Tommy Leonard added 71 yards on 14 carries and Dominiq Sprague had 31 yards on five carries.
Bourm was 7-for-9 passing for 51 yards and two touchdowns. Love had four catches for 25 yards and Clifford two for 15 and two touchdowns. Bauers had an 11-yard catch.
“I’m glad we won,” Shimko said. “There are things we can build on. We have to work on a team-building. This is a young team.”
Crescent (1-1, 2-4) next plays at Lummi (1-3, 2-4) next Friday.
Quilcene 68, Lummi 22
QUILCENE — The Quilcene football team got five touchdowns from James Miller and played its most complete game of the year to beat Lummi 68-22 on Saturday.
Miller scored three different ways. He had three rushing touchdowns on runs of 65, 10 and 26 yards, a 27-yard interception return and an 82-yard kickoff return. He ran the ball 15 times for 199 yards.
Coach Trey Beathard said the difference this week is that it was the first time all year they had all four seniors and juniors — Miller, Deakon Budnek, Dominick Smith and Eli Iverson — active for the game.
“We’re better when we have all four upper classmen,” Beathard said. “I feel like we’re getting a little bit better.”
Mason Iverson had 10 carries for 75 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown run. Smith carried the ball nine times for 54 yards and a touchdown, and had two catches for 36 yards. Deakon Budnek had a 40-yard touchdown reception. Andrew Perez had a 65-yard kickoff return that set up one of Miller’s touchdowns and a 7-yard touchdown run himself.
Quarterback Oliver Hopkins had three completions for 76 yards.
On defense, Maxx Budnek had three quarterback sacks. Beathard said Deakon Budnek also played great on defense, stopping Lummi’s short passing game, while Taylor Boling also had a good game on defense.
Quilcene (2-0, 3-4), which has now won three out of its past four games, next hosts Darrington (2-1, 5-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
