PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Crescent defense strong in loss; Neah Bay rolls over Quilcene

JOYCE — Though the Crescent football team fell just short of making the postseason, coach Brian Shimko was pleased with his team’s effort against a powerful Darrington team on Saturday.

Darrington won 26-0 as Crescent finished its season with a 4-5 record, including 2-4 in the Northwest 1B League.

“I’m OK with how the season ended. I’m stoked with how the game went,” Shimko said. He said Darrington came in to the contest averaging 50 points a game and Crescent gave up just four touchdowns, one of them coming late in the fourth quarter. He said it was Crescent’s first loss against Darrington, which has improved dramatically to an 8-1 record.

While Crescent played well defensively, Darrington had them scouted well and only allowed 10 yards of offense. Henry Bourm completed five passes for Crescent, but they were all short and only went for nine yards. The team had negative yardage rushing.

“They locked us down,” Shimko said.

Crescent also played tough defense with Josh Berson pressuring Darrington and deflecting four passes. Conner Bauers had two interceptions while Lukas Love had one. Bauers and Loki Ellis had fumble recoveries.

Crescent will lose six seniors next year — Bauers, Love, Tommy Leonard, Carter Clifford and Peyton Watson — but will bring back quarterback Bourm next year as well as a host of freshmen and sophomores.

Because Quilcene beat Crescent in a head-to-head matchup, the Rangers will be going to the district playoffs.

Bellevue Christian 51, East Jefferson 12

PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson got 157 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns from Cash Holmes, but it wasn’t enough in a 51-12 loss at Memorial Stadium.

Holmes had eight catches for 138 yards and a touchdown and ran five times for 19 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Aaron Glanz passed 10-for-16 for 164 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. He also gained 27 yards on 11 carries while Austin Glanz gained 32 yards on eight carries.

On defense, Manaseh Lanphear-Ramirez had 18 solo tackles, while Brody Anderson had 11 and Tyler Martin 10.

East Jefferson (0-8) gets one extra game next week, hosting Blaine (2-7) at 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium.

Neah Bay 54, Quilcene 14

QUILCENE — Neah Bay romped over Quilcene 54-14 in Quilcene as both teams get ready to begin postseason play next weekend.

With the victory, the Red Devils wrapped up a 6-0 record in the Northwest 1B League. After starting the season slowly with two bad losses, Neah Bay, which went to the 1B state championship game last year, has outscored its opponents 378-96 over the past six games.

“Their linemen are always good, but this year they have some linemen who can move around. They’re pretty athletic,” said Quilcene coach Trey Beathard.

For Quilcene, Andrew Perez had 72 yards rushing on seven carries and a 56-yard touchdown catch on a pass from Dominic Smith. He also caught a 14-yard pass. Mason Iverson ran 13 times for 74 yards and a 4-yard touchdown and had a 22-yard catch. Smith had 92 yards passing on three completion and gained 20 yards on seven carries.

Tyler Beukes had nine tackles and caused a fumble, while Taylor Boling, Kaeden Faller and Perez all had seven tackles.

Neah Bay (6-0, 6-2) begins its postseason Saturday in the quad-district playoffs, hosting Sound Christian Academy (1-8).

Quilcene (2-4, 3-6) will play at No. 2 seed Naselle (9-1) on Saturday.

“It will be a challenge for us, but we’re glad to be playing,” Beathard said.

Sequim game added

SEQUIM — The Sequim Wolves, who missed out on the district playoffs, will get an extra home game Friday. Sequim (2-6) will host Fife (4-5) at 7 p.m.
