PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Chimacum clamps down, Forks goes off, Sequim and Neah Bay fall

PORT TOWNSEND — A ball-control offense and a solid defensive performance boosted Chimacum to a 13-6 win over South Whidbey and a 2-0 start to the prep football season.

“Our defense was stout, we bent but didn’t break,” Cowboys head coach Mike Dowling said. “They gang-tackled well again and have only allowed six points in two games if you take away the kickoff return last week [against Neah Bay]. It was a good overall team effort. Our offense is doing well in ball-control, but we hurt ourselves with penalties.”

Logan Shaw rushed 15 times for 92 yards and a 24-yard touchdown for Chimacum, but Dowling said Shaw had two other scores, including a 60-plus yard TD run, called back by penalties.

Cole Dotson found Issac Purser for a passing touchdown in the second half to put the Cowboys up 13-6.

Dowling said South Whidbey, a squad the Cowboys beat last season, is much improved.

“South Whidbey is a tough team, a heck of a lot better than they were last year. Their all-league linebacker gave us some trouble. But this group hasn’t gotten down on themselves. They are starting to believe.”

Chimacum will head to Forks (2-0) next Friday.

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Cole Baysinger piled up five rushing touchdowns and produced 234 rushing yards on 22 carries as the Spartans won decisively for the second straight week.

Forks trailed 21-14 midway through in the second quarter before ripping off 40 unanswered points to lance the Knights.

“Our offensive line took the game over and we made an adjustment to [how we blocked] the 6-2 defense they were running,” Spartans coach Emil West said. “After that our backs had a field day.”

Baysinger’s night included touchdown runs of 86 and 31 yards.

Tristen Pisani added 134 rushing yards as Forks amassed 481 rushing yards.

West said King’s Way’s best player, Michael Garrison suffered an injury.

“He’s a heck of a player and you could see the wind go out of their sails after that,” West said.

And Forks’ conditioning helped put the game well out of reach.

“We were in better shape, so as the game went on the tougher we got,” West said.

“Cole killed it defensively … Brett Moody got a lot of pressure, but the whole team played well on defense after those initial scores.”

The Spartans host Chimacum (2-0) in a battle of unbeatens next Friday.

Montesano 41, Sequim 6

MONTESANO — The Wolves had trouble in the early going in their season opener against a seasoned Bulldogs squad with a game already under their belts.

“They are a well-oiled machine and they came out no-huddle and after the first probably five or seven minutes it was 21-0 Montesano,” Sequim coach Erik Wiker said.

“We settled down after that and played them pretty close the rest of the way, we just gave up too many big plays.”

Sequim’s touchdown came on a 10-yard run by Hayden Gresli in the second quarter.

Montesano quarterback Trevor Ridgway ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more, going 10 for 13 for 213 yards through the air. He also intercepted two Sequim passes.

“We drove on them quite a bit but had some unfortunate penalties stop drives and some bad timing with fumbles on some drives,” Wiker said.

The Wolves (0-1) host Centralia (1-1) on Friday.

Lummi 28, Neah Bay 0

BELLINGHAM — The Red Devils committed six turnovers, four through the air and two on the ground in a loss to the rival Blackhawks.

Lummi’s Caleb Revey had a big night offensively catching three touchdown passes. He also had two of the team’s interceptions.

Neah Bay (0-2) has yet to score offensively this season, its lone touchdown coming on the opening kick in last week’s loss to Chimacum.

The Red Devils host Seattle Lutheran at 6 p.m. Friday.
