The prep football game of the week last week was by the Neah Bay Red Devils.
The Red Devils made a heck of a statement with a 58-20 win in the heat and smoke of Forks over Naselle, a 1B powerhouse.
Neah Bay somehow made the state football playoffs last year with a team full of eighth- and ninth-graders. Meanwhile, Naselle was in the state semifinals. And the game ended up not even being close. Neah Bay got up 44-0 before Naselle even scored.
The rest of the teams at the 1B level will certainly take notice of that shocker.
Crescent 46, Taholah 8
A young Crescent team got a solid win over Taholah. Conner Ferro-May had more than 100 yards rushing and Kaiden Charles and Tommy Leonard each had long kickoff returns.
Clallam Bay 70, Mary M. Knight 7
Clallam Bay got its first win in more than two years in 6-man football. The Bruins also have a full schedule set this year against small schools around the Olympic Peninsula. Things are looking up for a program that has worked hard just to stay alive the past couple of years.
Anacortes 57, Port Angeles 0
This is a game that got completely away from Port Angeles. Keep in mind that the Riders manhandled Blaine a week earlier. Anacortes, coming off a 9-1 season and having beaten a 3A school, Oak Harbor, 35-7, is simply a very good team. This game was actually competitive until late in the second quarter. But the Anacortes defense held on a fourth-and-1 in its own territory, then scored two touchdowns in 77 seconds. That sequence quickly blew open what had been a close game.
Tenino 52, Sequim 14
The Wolves had their second rough loss in a row, this one on the road, to a good 1A opponent. Tenino is an old opponent of Forks’, and the Evergreen 1A League is one of the toughest 1A football leagues in the state.
Mossyrock 54, Quilcene 16
Quilcene is young and still missing some players early in the season. Coach Trey Beathard predicted that the Rangers might struggle early in the season. He expects the team to improve.
King’s 48, East Jefferson 6
The Rivals lost to a good, private, Seattle 1A school in Seattle. King’s went 10-3 last year and has scored 48 points in both of its games this year.
Forks vs. La Conner, canceled
Forks’ game against La Conner had to be canceled because of heavy smoke in Skagit County from the Bolt Creek Fire. It was a nonleague game and will not be made up.
