FORKS — It was a rough weekend for 2A teams Sequim and Port Angeles, but Forks got its first win of the year in an exciting back-and-forth battle and Quilcene won its second straight.
Meanwhile, Neah Bay lost a heartbreaker to Darrington in a game decided by points after touchdown.
Forks beat Ilwaco 37-33 in a game that featured a number of big plays as the Spartans got a couple of their injured players back. Titus Rowley had a pick-six to give the Spartans a score, while Cash Barajas had 124 kick and punt return yards and had a 60-yard interception return. Mario Reyes kicked four extra points and a 25-yard field goal in what turned out to be the difference in the game.
Kade Highfield scored three touchdowns for the Spartans while Steffen Kingston led the team in rushing and had a touchdown.
Despite all the Spartans’ struggles with injuries this season, they stand on top of the Pacific 2B standings after the Ilwaco win.
Forks (1-1, 1-4) next plays at Adna (2-1, 3-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Bremerton 34, Sequim 12
SEQUIM — Sequim’s defense struggled against Bremerton’s running game in a 34-12 home loss.
The Knights rushed for more than 400 yards with two players, Kenneth Najera and Marquise Allen, both rushing for more than 135 yards. Sequim had 312 yards of offense, 119 passing and 193 rushing. The Wolves’ highlight was a 51-yard catch and run by Liam Wiker on a screen pass by quarterback Kaden Miller to set the Wolves up inside the 10-yard line.
Wiker had a good overall game with 126 yards rushing on 17 carries and a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs. He also finished with two catches for 60 yards. But the Wolves were hurt by Bremerton touchdown runs of 74, 42 and 35 yards.
Bremerton got off to an 0-3 start, but is now leading the Olympic League with two league wins. The Wolves are still looking for their first Olympic League win after getting off to a 3-0 start.
Sequim (0-2, 3-2) hosts North Kitsap (2-1, 3-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.
North Kitsap 31, Port Angeles 7
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Roughriders came in to Friday’s game flying high after an Olympic League win over Sequim last week, but turnovers doomed their chances against a good North Kitsap team in a 31-7 loss at Civic Field on Friday night.
The Riders threw five interceptions. It seemed like any time Port Angeles got some momentum, the Vikings would come up with a turnover to kill it.
The Riders generated their share of offense, gaining 250 yards on the Vikings. The Port Angeles defense also held North Kitsap scoreless through the second half.
The Riders did make some good plays all game long and at times drove the ball, but drive after drive was killed by turnovers.
One of the best plays of the game was by Jagger Hjelmseth in the second quarter. The Vikings completed a long pass to a receiver who got behind the Riders’ defensive backs and seemed to be going in for a touchdown, but Hjelmseth ran down the receiver, stripped the ball before he could score, then recovered it on the 1-yard line.
Another great play was by quarterback Carson Waddell and receiver Oliver Martinez. Martinez got wide open behind the North Kitsap defense in the third quarter and Waddell was able to hit him with a long pass. Martinez got caught by North Kitsap defenders, but then faked out a couple of Vikings players to gain another 10 yards or so. In all, it was a 50-yard play. Waddell finished off that drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.
Hunter Flores had three sacks. Waddell passed 12-for-27 and 148 yards. Martinez finished with two catches for 70 yards, while Jude Wallace had five catches for 35 yards.
Dylan Mann ran tough all game, gaining 53 yards on 16 carries. The Riders finished with 101 rushing yards.
Port Angeles (1-2, 2-3) plays at Bainbridge (0-2, 0-4) on Friday, looking to get back to .500 both in the league and overall.
Quilcene 52, Muckleshoot 6
QUILCENE — Quilcene won its second straight game 52-6 over Muckleshoot with a second straight huge game from Isaac Figueroa, who gained 223 yards rushing and had an 83-yard touchdown run.
The Rangers overcame more than 200 yards of penalties in the win. One penalty wiped out a 60-yard touchdown run by Robert Evans.
Figueroa ended up scoring two touchdowns and had 14 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.
Several other Rangers had big games. Evans rushed for 117 yards and had another 36 receiving, while Logan Carstensen had 74 yards receiving with a touchdown.
Oliver Hopkins had 68 yards rushing with two touchdowns and Tristan Naputi had a 25-yard touchdown run. Kaden Lont had eight tackles on defense and a fumble recovery, while Hunter Simmons had eight tackles and a quarterback sack.
In the past two wins, the Rangers have outscored their opponents 112-36 after an 0-3 start to the season.
Quilcene (2-3) next plays at Darrington (4-1) on Oct. 17.
Darrington 38, Neah Bay 36
NEAH BAY — The Neah Bay football team actually scored more touchdowns than Darrington, but the Loggers converted most of their two-point conversions while the Red Devils did not convert any, leading to a Darrington 38-36 win.
“We had six touchdowns and they had five. We left 12 points on the board,” said Neah Bay head coach T.J. Greene. “Darrington earned that win for sure. We made too many mistakes. We had opportunities to put them away,” Greene said.
Neah Bay (2-1, 2-2) will look to bounce back Friday at Lummi (2-2, 2-2).
Klahowya 27, East Jefferson 13
SILVERDALE — The East Jefferson football team moved the ball well against Nisqually League foe Klahowya, but struggled with its pass defense and in the red zone, said coach Nick Snyder.
Klahowya had four touchdown passes in the game as Eagles quarterback Dalton Watson threw for 309 yards.
Snyder said the Rivals also got inside the 25-yard line four times and came away with just one touchdown.
Snyder said Luke O’Hara had a big game for the Rivals with at least 100 yards receiving and that Jackson Dupuy did well running the ball, scoring one of East Jefferson’s touchdowns.
The Rivals’ other touchdown came on a “scoop and score” on defense from Noah Cervantes.
East Jefferson (0-2, 1-3) next hosts Annie Wright (2-1, 4-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Port Townsend Memorial Stadium.
In other games this weekend, Clallam Bay beat Lake Quinault 52-6.
