PREP FOOTBALL: Quilcene hangs with Lummi for a half in state quarterfinal loss

BELLINGHAM — Quilcene hung with Lummi for much of the first half before Blackhawks pulled away to end the Rangers season in a 40-0 1B state quarterfinal defeat Saturday.

Trailing 6-0, Quilcene marched to the Lummi 20 before its drive stalled and the Blackhawks forced a turnover on downs.

The Rangers’ red zone woes continued in the second quarter when Lummi’s Trazil Lane intercepted a pass and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown.

Quilcene also gave up a late first-half score when Jonathan Casimir connected with Free Borsey on a 26-yard TD pass to put Lummi up 20-0 at the break.

After Lummi recovered an onside kick to open the second half, Lane went 42 yards for another TD that gave the Blackhawks 28-0 lead with just more than a minute gone in the third quarter.

The loss closed the door on arguably the best season in school history for Quilcene (8-3).

The Rangers won their first-ever state playoff game in four trips in last week’s 56-8 drubbing of Taholah.

Lummi (9-3) now moves on to the state semifinals against Neah Bay. The Blackhawks have fallen to the Red Devils in the past there state semis at the Tacoma Dome.
